Associate - M&A

Main Purpose:

We are looking for a candidate at the Associate level with business acumen in one or more of these areas infrastructure, power, renewables, logistic and energy transition sectors, who is capable of both assisting other senior team members the analysis, structuring, negotiation and execution of larger and more complex transactions, while at the same time maintaining responsibility for and leading on smaller transactions. To be relevant the candidate must have a significant M&A experience, including working on completed transactions, in one of the above markets is essential.

The M&A team is directly involved across the breadth of operations of the Pumagroup of companies and responsible for investments related to oil and gas, metals and minerals, renewables, power and carbon (in each case, production, processing / refining, trading and distribution); as well as energy and transport infrastructure (including terminals, pipelines, rail and shipping).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities, Key Responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Making investments that are capable of generating material long term value to the trading desks

  • Use of the Puma balance sheet, as well as partner funding where appropriate, to invest in opportunities capable of exiting at a profit, generally within a 3-5 year time frame
  • Taking the lead and managing smaller and less complex deals (both with business development and M&A

Competencies:

  • Strong financial modelling/valuation and analytical skills are critical
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, both internally and externally
  • Ability to present internally and externally, as well as being able to originate transactions through their network
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships internally including with the trading desks, legal, corporate finance, tax and analytics teams
  • Ability to manage a transaction from end-to-end (from initial / desktop analysis, through evaluation and internal presentation to external negotiation, financing and execution)
  • Highly organized / ability to multi-task and detail-oriented / team player
  • Self-confidence and an ability to work quickly and effectively in a high-pressure environment
  • Willingness to travel and meet potential purchasers, sellers, investors or partners
  • Degree level (or equivalent) in economics, business or a related field
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 5-7 years of experience in a M&A team in a corporate, trading house / physical commodities company or investment bank ()
  • Strong understanding of one or more of the infrastructure, power, renewables, logistic and energy transition sectors
  • Relevant M&A experience, including working on completed transactions, in one of the above markets is essential
  • Ultimately one would be expected to become a “generalist” across all areas where Puma is operating
  • Strong business knowledge of LATAM geographic area

Key Relationships and Department Overview:

  • Internal: Puma Energy Board, Executive committee, Investment Committee< Communication team and the wider Finance community.
  • External: Shareholders, commercial and investment banks, bond investors, credit and ESG rating agencies, international law firms.
