Your tasks

The Institute of Insurance Economics at the University of St. Gallen seeks to hire a PhD Position (Research Associate) in the Team on Financial Economics of Insurance. This position provides excellent opportunities to develop valuable analytic skills and gain deep insights into diverse areas of financial economics of insurance that are applicable to a broad spectrum of exciting career paths ranging from academia to central banking and financial services industry. Examples of the current research topics of the team includes


  • Finance and insurance of extreme risks such as pandemic, cyber and climate

  • Private equity ownership in insurance and investment of insurers in alternative assets

  • Insurance protection gaps and the structure of the global insurance market

  • Interconnection between insurers and banks, financial markets, and credit rating agencies

The Institute of Insurance Economics' work environment is informal, intellectually stimulating, and exciting. The researcher will benefit from hands-on experience with research methods and opportunities to work closely with Swiss and international corporate partners and the world's leading academic institutions and international organizations.

Your profile

Candidates for this position are expected to enroll in the PhD program in Finance at the University of St. Gallen. University of St Gallen is a member of the Swiss Finance Institute. The candidate should fulfill the following qualifications:


  • Outstanding Master's degree in economics/finance or a related field from a leading university or business school

  • Strong interest in financial economics, risk management and insurance

  • Demonstrated suitability to work on analytical problems and solid empirical analysis skills

  • Previous research experience in financial regulation, insurance or banking-related environment is a definite plus

  • First practical experience in a profession closely related to financial intermediation and insurance management is a plus
