The Chair of the History and Theory of Urban Design at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), led by Prof. Tom Avermaete, is seeking a highly motivated and qualified postdoctoral colleague. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on innovative research projects and educational approaches in the field of the history and theory of urban design.

Project background

The Chair of the History and Theory of Urban Design investigates the histories and theories of urban development as critical and prospective capacities, which can forge connections in the present between the past and the future. Candidates should have an interest in the core research tracks of the Chair of the History and Theory of Urban Design including:

  • Foundations: the fundamental premises of the discipline of urban design, as articulated in theoretical concepts, design approaches, tools, and roles of the designer.
  • Methods: the methodologies by which we write histories of urban design, which are in need of constant revision to address blind spots in the canonized histories.
  • Horizons: new and understudied thematic angles and vantage points from which histories of urban design can be written, addressing current-day concerns.

Job description

The candidate will hold one of three senior positions, contributing actively to the research and educational development as well as the organization of the Chair, including:

  • Active participation in research activities of the Chair, including support for the acquisition of new research projects, as well the development of an individual research trajectory
  • Contribution to teaching the core courses of the Chair (Bachelor and Master), with an emphasis on the relation between theory and practice
  • Participation in the organizational and administrative tasks of the Chair
  • Support in the culture of the Chair, through involvement in reading groups, mentoring of doctoral candidates, the organization of workshops, etc

Your profile

  • PhD related to the history and theory of urban design
  • At least 2-3 years of postdoc experience
  • Successful experience with research funding applications
  • Affinity with design practice and culture
  • Interest and experience in teaching
  • Ability to work in a team, problem-solving skills and ability to self-organize and take personal responsibility in the fulfillment of tasks
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English, as well as German and/or French
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Based in, or willing to move to, Zurich

This position will be available, with an ideal starting date between July 2024 and September 2024. The positions are offered on a fixed-term basis. The initial contract duration is 1 year, with a possibility of extension based on performance evaluation.
