Head of L&C International

This role will lead the Legal & Compliance (L&C) function for International and act as a strategic business partner to the President of International, President of International Surgical and President of International Vision Care and International Marketing Group. This person will have the ability to advise at very senior level on international franchise & business strategies for compliance with applicable laws and regulations as well as Alcon standards and policies.

This person will adopt a pro-active, pragmatic and customer-focused approach to implementing strategic business models, driving awareness and effectiveness of legal and compliance issues/requirements (with a particular focus on anti-trust, anti-bribery and data privacy), managing complex transactions and any litigations/government investigations that may arise. 

This role will focus on high value work, drive simplicity, efficiency and consistency throughout the International L&C organization while promoting a culture of integrity and strengthening the reputation of Alcon.

Additionally, you will devise legal and compliance needs and submit resource plans – develop necessary role profiles, hire, manage the performance of and further professionally develop lawyers and compliance officers within International.

Regions in scope include: Europe, APAC, Japan and GEM.

Business size up to USD5 bio.

The Head of L&C International sits on the International Leadership team.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides substantive and strategic legal and compliance support to the International leadership team,

  • Acts as a strategic business partner focused on high value work in all actions relating to the company’ strategic projects and transactions

  • Anticipates and maintains up-to-date knowledge of current laws and industry regulations of the different countries in International, to provide strategic advice and foster compliance including with third party distributors (providing regular trainings to ensure that third party distributors operate under the same compliance principles as Alcon)

  • Active core member of the International legal and compliance team

  • Provides guidance to support the reduction of risks and avoidance of unanticipated disruptions to the business and manages disputes and dispute resolutions as well as government investigations.

  • Is responsible for development of, and counsel, on appropriate Alcon’s policies in connection with International, including appropriate training of business partners and other Alcon associates.

  • Supervises any required FCPA, compliance or internal investigations/audits or its personnel in close collaboration with the Head, Global Litigation and Government Investigations and Head, Global Integrity and Compliance

  • Supervises the implementation of global or regional compliance initiatives, policies and training in close collaboration with the Global Compliance Officer.

  • Acts as a leader and manager to the Attorneys and Compliance officers, developing talent, setting objectives, conducting performance reviews and development discussions.

  • Oversees and manages as applicable external counsel and ensure that (i) Alcon receives timely, efficient and effective legal advice and representation; and (ii) the legal fees and expenses are reasonable for the services provided.

  • Travels as needed throughout International for various meetings, conferences or training sessions.

Key Requirements

  • Law degree and bar admittance or license to practice law in a major European, Asia or US market.

  • No less than 15 (fifteen) years of relevant legal practice experience and prefer three (3) years of experience in medical device and pharmaceuticals regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to counsel effectively from a legal, compliance and business perspective.

  • Driving Speed and Simplicity/Ownership and Accountability

  • Proactive attitude, excellent communication leadership skills diplomacy, candor and a willingness to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization on an international, regional, and global basis.

  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English.
