The Tax Technology Manager role is a key contributor to the Alcon Group Tax Technology and Improvements strategy across all areas of tax - global transfer pricing, direct and indirect tax, tax reporting as well as International and U.S. tax compliance. The Tax Technology Manager is a key player in designing/enhancing the Alcon Tax Technology roadmap and will be directly responsible for its implementation. Specifically, he/she drives, together with the tax management team, the definition of the priorities, actions and timeline.

The Tax Technology Manager actively ensures that the tax function makes a streamlined use of technology in areas such as indirect tax, preparation of the US consolidated federal income tax return, state income tax returns, quarterly tax provision calculations, effective tax rate forecasting, transfer pricing and OECD’s minimum tax calculations through continuous evaluation of the processes and tools utilised and the potential for automation.  His/Her projects will range from process improvements (e.g. data gathering) to strategic projects such as the readiness of the Tax Function for major reforms. The Manager works closely with the Global Tax team members, as well as different teams within the company (such as Information Technology, Financial Reporting & Accounting, Business Planning & Analysis, amongst others) and external stakeholders.


In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Gains deep understanding of the business and finance/reporting processes, systems and data that support strategic (indirect) tax processes and/or positions.

  • Supports the senior Tax Team members in the design of a Tax Technology strategic roadmap and the development of a multi-year action plan.

  • Supports the senior Tax Team members in the assessment of the current state solutions and evaluation of opportunities to streamline and/or automate various workstreams within the Indirect Tax, Direct Tax, Transfer Pricing, Income Tax Compliance and Tax Accounting groups as stand-alone as well as cross functional processes.

  • Supports the senior Tax Team members in the evaluation and implementation of technology, tools and/or platforms to improve accuracy and/or efficiency of the Group tax reporting and compliance processes (direct and indirect) and to maximize the effective use of data to manage (indirect) tax position and/or calculations (e.g. data analytics).

  • Directly responsible for the implementation of the Tax Technology action plan and other Tax Technology initiatives for the department under the direction of the team leaders and in coordination with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Oversees the maintenance and/or changes in the end-to-end automated Indirect Tax determination set-up in the system to ensure strict adherence to Group Policies, procedures and guidelines. Evaluates opportunities for further system enhancements and improvements.

  • Coordinates the enhancement of the OneSource tax tools used in the tax department for tighter financial statement and tax return reporting.

  • Leads and reviews testing for new solutions and/or changes in the system.

  • Interfaces with leadership, internal & external customers, Information Technology and other key stakeholders within the company. Builds collaborative relationships with various business partners within the company.

  • Keeps up to date with latest trends in tax technology and leverage those in building plans and strategies.

  • Develops and leads training for stakeholders in his/her field of responsibility.

  • Ensures record retention practices and format meet IRS and state audit requirements.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO ALCON:

Language(s)

  • Fluent in English both written and spoken.

  • Other languages are beneficial.

Experience

  • BA/BS Degree in Accountancy preferred.

  • CPA and/or MS in Tax strongly preferred.

  • 5-10 years of experience with progressive responsibilities.

  • Previous experience in a tax role will be a plus but is not mandatory. Key competency: the ability to understand the substance and/or reporting (indirect) tax requirements and translate those into executable processes/solutions.

  • Ability to understand the touchpoints between Tax, Finance and Business Functions.

  • Experience with SAP and SAP modules interfaces/dependencies for tax determination.

  • Experience with OneSource and CorpTax.

  • Very good analytical skills and proactive attitude.

  • Superior judgment and critical thinking skills.

  • Self-starter, self-learner and performance oriented.

  • Project Management experience and ability to balance multiple initiatives/projects, timelines and to oversee projects to completion.

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
