The Interfaculty Bioinformatics Unit of the University of Bern and the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension of the Bern University Hospital are looking for a Bioinformatician (100%) to complete our team.

The aim of this interfaculty project is to decipher the genetic basis of kidney stones, a very common and global healthcare problem.

Tasks

  • Primary processing of data from NGS experiments, for example RNA-seq, whole genome or whole exome resequencing, metagenomics, de novo assembly

  • Analysis of whole exome sequencing data of a large cohort of kidney stone formers and non-stone forming controls (>1000 samples), and integration with corresponding phenotypic metadata

  • Collaborate with researchers and clinicians on all data analysis steps, in particular complexity reduction (e.g. GSEA), various statistical analyses and data visualisation

  • Consult researchers with the planning of NGS experiments

  • Teaching practical courses in bioinformatics/biostatistics

Requirements

  • Ideally, you have a PhD in biology, bioinformatics or biostatistics and

  • proven experience with NGS data analysis

  • proficiency in one or more programming languages and databases (e.g. C++, Python, R, Java, mysql, postgres)

  • experience in GWAS and WES

  • a strong interest in working on different projects in a collaborative role

  • experience in biostatistics and/or machine learning

  • very good organisational skills, in particular a demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects in parallel

  • a demonstrated ability to collaborate with researchers from various fields

We offer

  • A 2 year position postdoc position/staff scientist, with the possibility for extension

  • A supportive working environment and excellent computational resources

  • Very varied work and the opportunity to learn new methods and technical skills

  • Starting date is 1. April or upon agreement

The working language of our group is English. Knowledge of German is useful but not required. To apply, please send a letter of motivation and a CV with the contact details of two referees as a single pdf file to Jolanda Paganoni Zurbrügg.
