PhD Student 100%
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people.
For the Small Angle Neutron Scattering and Reflectometry Group within the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging we are looking for a
PhD Studentin experimental Soft Matter PhysicsYour tasksYou will explore the phase behavior, crystallization, and glass transition in microgel suspensions used as a model system for soft colloids. Microgels are cross-linked polymer particles of colloidal size immersed in a solvent. They respond reversibly to changes in their environment by changing their size and rigidity and therefore are of interest for various applications. In particular, microgels are suited for studies of fundamental aspects of crystallization or the glass transition in soft and deformable colloids. The main methods for the study of single-particle properties and suspension behavior are optical microscopy, light-, neutron- and X-Ray scattering, rheology, and osmometry. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the Soft Condensed Matter Laboratory of Prof. Alberto Fernandez-Nieves, and you are expected to work in the partner laboratory for part of the project.Your profileYou should hold a master's degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science and be highly motivated to do experimental research in an international team in order to obtain an in-depth knowledge in several experimental techniques. Spoken and written English on at least an upper-intermediate level (CEFR B2) is required. Good knowledge of condensed matter physics, soft condensed matter physics, scattering methods as well as programming skills for data analysis are a plus. While enjoying both, experimental and theoretical work, having a solution-oriented work attitude is also considered as a plus.We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
