The Interfaculty Centre for Educational Research (ICER) of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Bern is looking for an assistant as of February 1, 2026, or by arrangement.
The overarching goal of ICER is to promote analytical-empirical insights in educational research. In this context, ICER hosts national educational monitoring projects such as the large-scale assessments "Basic Skills Assessment (ÜGK)" and the "Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)". Furthermore, ICER works on third-party funded projects and offers research-based services and transfer activities (for example, conducting the panel study "Career Tracker Cohorts" of the SNSF).
Tasks
Sub-area 1: Methodical-technical support (approx. 20-50%)
- Support in the preparation, checking, and cleaning of raw data from various projects
- Support in the harmonization and documentation of data
- Support in the delivery of tests (e.g., integration of test tasks into the test software)
- Possibly further development of automations, including in the area of data documentation
Sub-area 2: Administrative-linguistic support (approx. 15%)
- Editorial work (revision of reports, documentation, and survey instruments)
- Administrative support, e.g., in creating glossaries or in linguistic review of written materials
- Assistance in the preparation of surveys (address research, creation of information letters, and testing of programmed surveys)
Sub-area 3: Translations into Italian (approx. 5%)
- Translations of website content, presentations, and various documents into Italian
- Various administrative and linguistic support services, e.g., in creating glossaries or in linguistic review of written materials in Italian
It is possible to apply for individual or all sub-areas. The amount of work varies accordingly and can be individually adjusted. Please indicate in your application which sub-areas and for what workload (indication of the desired percentage of employment) you are applying for.
Requirements
- Ongoing master's degree (or advanced bachelor's degree) related to quantitative data analysis (e.g., social sciences, educational sciences, economics, psychology) and/or in the field of languages/humanities (depending on the sub-area you are applying for)
- Quick comprehension and careful, structured working style
- Interest in educational research and enjoyment in working with data and/or texts
Additionally, depending on the sub-area
- Sub-area 1: Very good knowledge in data preparation with statistical software (R; ideally STATA; alternatively very good knowledge in Python)
- Sub-area 2: Very good knowledge of MS Office programs Word and Excel, very good German skills as well as good written expression; ideally good English and French skills
- Sub-area 3: Very good Italian skills
