For the Data and Analysis Research Infrastructure Group we are looking for a

DevOps / Systems Engineer (80-100%)

Your tasks

As part of this role, you will have the responsibility for the near-time experimental IT infrastructure of the critical and data and computationally intensive experiments of the SLS (Swiss Light Source) Synchrotron. This infrastructure includes state of the art compute, storage, and network equipment. You will participate in the IT infrastructure design as part of team of experts in different fields and debug complex technical problems that may involve different Linux technologies and distributed systems. You will also:
  • Co-design, implement, and support high throughput solutions (compute, network, storage)
  • Engage in active communication with experimental scientists to assess ideal solutions to their needs
  • Act as deputy for other scientific IT infrastructures
  • Provide support for the user community
  • Support IT management in decision making, by providing e.g. technical expertise, reports, usage statistics

Your profile

You are a Linux expert with the interest and will to acquire new skills and learn new technologies. You enjoy working in a team and be responsible for critical IT infrastructure. You have extensive experience in at least one of these topics:
  • Linux operating system configuration and management, with proven scripting skills
  • Operations, configuration, and management of parallel file systems (IBM Storage Scale, Lustre, etc.)
  • Operations, configuration, and management of resource scheduling tools (batch systems like SLURM, etc.)
  • Deployment automation with state-of-the-art tools (Ansible, Puppet, etc.)
  • Performance monitoring, log analysis and alarming of large computational clusters (e.g. Icinga, Grafana, Elastic)
  • Professional knowledge of English
The following criteria are an advantage (one or more):
  • Experience in operating IT infrastructure in a Scientific environment (not necessarily academic)
  • Experience in planning and procurement of computational clusters
  • Hands-on experience with container technologies (Docker, Podman) and container orchestration
  • High speed network fabrics (InfiniBand, 40/100G Ethernet, ...)
  • Knowledge and experience developing with programming languages like Python, Go or equivalent
  • Knowledge of German or willingness to learn it
