Applied Physicist (EP-ADE-TK-2024-81-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an Applied Physicist with a passion for challenging and exciting projects in the field of particle physics experiments? Then seize the opportunity and join the ATLAS group in CERN’s Experimental Physics Department (EP) and integration of the next generation silicon tracker for the ATLAS experiment, the Inner Tracker (ITk). The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in many areas of the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel. Within our team, you will contribute to the integration and commissioning of leading-edge technical solutions for this next generation of particle detector.

Functions

The selected candidate will play an important role in the integration and commissioning of the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel for the Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS experiment. This activity includes the integration and quality control of parts of the Outer Barrel during its construction and installation. It involves the reception test of the components, and the testing and evaluation of the detector parts, as well as the monitoring of the integration progress and preparation of the detector commissioning. The candidate will install and operate the setup and test infrastructure in the surface laboratory, interface with the different teams involved in the integration of the Outer Barrel and contribute to achieving a fully functional detector.

The specific functions of this job will be:

  • Contribute to the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel Integration at CERN;
  • Install and commission the infrastructure for electrical tests, including the electrical and cooling equipment; establish and document the operation procedures;
  • Implement the required parts and their handling in the production database and test routines;
  • Support the development of the Outer Barrel Integration QC and tests during various integration and installation stages; provide information to collaborating teams and report on progress in meetings;
  • Support the reception testing of components for Outer Barrel integration;
  • Lead the testing and evaluation activities of part of the Outer Barrel integration; Sign-off of the results including documentation of results and systematic reporting;
  • Closely interact with teams and activity coordinators working on integration ensuring the integrated detector components meet the specifications;
  • Contribute to Outer Barrel commissioning and its preparation for in-cavern testing;
  • Contribute to R&D activities of the team in the field of pixel detector development.

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics engineering or physics or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the field of semiconductor detectors for particle physics experiments.
  • Proven experience in silicon detector operation and quality control including the development, installation, and commissioning of laboratory infrastructure.
  • Experience in performance evaluation of silicon tracking systems.
  • Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team and international collaboration, including physicists, engineers and technicians involved in work on detector construction.
  • It would be an asset to have experience on CAD design of mechanics components or cooling plant operation.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of solid-state based particle detection technologies especially silicon detectors for high energy particle experiments.
  • Assembly and integration of detectors in particular construction of silicon detectors.
  • Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components including electrical characterisation and quality management of semiconductor detectors.
  • Assembly and operation of infrastructure for detectors.
  • Organisation, planning and control including supervision of students and technicians.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind. Producing comprehensive work / project plans taking into account resources and contingencies.
