The Embedded Sensing Group (ESG) is part of the Institute of Computer Science Vorarlberg (ICV-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). As of today, sensors are a major interface translating the physical into the digital world. Our mission in this context is to establish excellent research in the field of embedded sensors and their communication, addressing application trade-offs involving performance, efficiency, and security requirements. Together with other groups at the School of Computer Science (SCS-HSG) at HSG, we are committed to offering a full and up-to-date curriculum on embedded sensors and their communication to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Your tasks
Primary
- You design and conduct research in the field of embedded sensors and constrained sensor networks.
- You link scientific findings with industry specific applications.
- You support the group in knowledge transfer with industry in applied projects.
- You engage in teaching at HSG, including courses and supervision of masters' and bachelors' theses.
Secondary
- You collaborate with other researchers in interdisciplinary projects.
- You help the group in organizing workshops, seminars, and conferences.
- You engage in outreach activities to promote research and increase the lab's visibility.
- You participate in grant writing and proposal development activities.
Your profile
- You have a university-level master's degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Desirable: excellent if you have previous publications in journals or conferences.
- You have an excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Desirable: you have a good command of the German language.
- You have a good knowledge of programming languages C/C++ and Python. Desirable: excellent if you have experience programming hardware boards (MCUs).
- You have a basic understanding of Linux-based and Real-time Operating Systems (RTOS). Desirable: very good if you already have experience with low-level interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART).
- You have a good knowledge of networking protocols. Desirable: excellent if you have experience with protocols for constrained networks (e.g., LoRa, CoAP, Zigbee, MQTT).
- You have an independent, structured way of working, and the ability to independently manage your time.
- You enjoy hands-on work and prototyping with real-world devices and sensors.
- A fully-funded position during the entire PhD at the ICV-HSG campus, located in Dornbirn, Austria
