Project Engineer for Machine Buildings (SCE-PPM-2024-90-GRAP)

Job Description

Your responsibilities

As a Project Engineer in SCE Department, PPM Group, you will work under the supervision of a CERN Project Manager, coordinating construction projects with internal and external stakeholders.

If selected, you will: 

  • Follow up design of new CERN civil engineering projects, in particular:
    • Participate in feasibility studies & preliminary design;
    • Commission design from external architects/engineers;
    • Coordinate CE design with those for other equipment and submit a detailed design to end users;
    • Take part in the preparation of calls for tenders, firms selection, opening of offers, decisions on designer selection.
  • Supervise the execution of CE works:
    • Ensure, with external consultants, all new CE surface and underground construction comply with contractual drawings & specification documents;
    • Supervise works on-site, check measurements based on bill of quantities, certify payments and make sure costs and schedules are maintained;
    • Organize hand-over procedures, follow up any subsequent work;
    • Ensure all safety measures are taken.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Experience in Civil Engineering design or construction
  • Use of PM tools
  • Autonomous, flexible, multi-tasking
  • Communicator, diplomatic negotiator
  • Fluent in both English and French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Civil Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
