Electrical Engineer - Cabling Projects (EN-EL-CS-2024-94-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

The Engineering Department  (EN)  pushes back the limits of technology so that physicists can carry out their research. Within the Electrical Engineering  group of the EN department, you will join the Cabling Services Section which ensures electrical interconnections, both signal and power, for numerous components crucial to CERN operation. Additionally, the section is responsible of the DC cables interconnecting the power converters and the magnets, including high-current circuits that incorporate water-cooled cables.

Are you an experienced electrical engineer looking to take part in the design, planning, installation and maintenance of signal and power cable installations in a large industrial setting? Join in and contribute to the infrastructures that form the backbone of CERN's accelerator complex. Take part!

Functions

As an Electrical Engineer within the Cabling Section, you will play a key role in expanding, strengthening, and maintaining CERN's signal and power cable installations, required for various systems within the CERN accelerators, such as vacuum systems, alarm systems, magnet powering systems, and instrumentation. You will have specific responsibility for DC cables, including their sizing, procurement, commissioning, and management throughout their operational lifespan.

You will:

  • Conduct technical studies to implement efficient and reliable power cable systems including water-cooled cables.
  • Draw up cable technical specifications, participate to tendering process and manage associated industrial supply contracts.
  • Manage complex cabling projects from the study phase to commissioning.
  • Participate in the development of plans for installation, testing and maintenance, along with their associated procedures.
  • Organize, supervise and ensure safety for cabling activities on the CERN worksites, requiring close on-site interactions with contractors, services and CERN users from other groups and departments.
  • Definition of cable requirements according to user's requests.
  • Supervise staff technicians and graduates within the Cabling Section.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing projects in the domain of electrical infrastructures.
  • Strong experience in the design and studies of low and medium voltage electrical cable and busbar distribution systems.
  • Experience in specification of signal and power cables, and their associated connectors.
  • Experience in maintenance of electrical distribution equipment over their operational life.

Technical competencies:

  • Project management
  • Design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of electrical cable systems.
  • Design and manufacturing of low and high-voltage cables and connectors.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Achieving Results: driving work / projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion.
  • Solving Problems: anticipating obstacles; assessing alternative solutions in order to have a fall-back plan. Identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
  • Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships. Sharing and letting others participate in own work/project; encouraging team development.
  • Communicating Effectively: listening actively to others and letting others speak. Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages. Basic knowledge of the other language would be an asset or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
