The Position

The position

At Roche, 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare.

We believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow. Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) is a global function within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED).

As a team member in the Prediction Modelling and Data Analytics of PS, you will work in close collaboration with toxicologists as well as other scientists in pRED, using state-of-the-art bioinformatics and biostatistics tools and methods and gaining toxicological insights from experts in the field.

Large Language Models have evolved from text completion tools to powerful models for data extraction, summarization, enrichment and capture. Data that has been captured only in documents, reports, presentations and meetings could be extracted and re-used and as such support and enable reverse translation of knowledge from the past into the future.

The position in question is aimed to support the application of LLMs for toxicological data extraction and enrichment from historical documents. The extracted data will be used to enrich already existing data sources as well as provide the knowledge base for development of new ones according to the specific needs of the toxicologists.

The position

We are seeking a student pursuing a master’s or PhD degree with expertise in computer science and strong interest in LLMs and their application in the field of toxicology.

In this position you will:

  • Explore different LLMs for toxicological data extraction from historical documents (reports, presentations, etc)

  • Improve and support the existing workflows by data extraction

  • Apply the improved workflows for different use cases related to data enrichment and extraction

  • Collect requirements from final users for data visualization and use

Qualifications Required:

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master’s program or have completed your (Master’s or Bachelor) studies not longer than 12 months ago in bioinformatics, biomedicine or computational sciences with interest or working knowledge in biology, toxicology, and/or life sciences.

You have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Programming skills in Python;

  • Knowledge and interest in pharmacology /toxicology/life sciences is an advantage;

  • Good data engineering, visualization, and interpretation skills are desirable;

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.
