JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Digital Sustainability Specialist will participate in research and innovation projects where technology and digitalisation strive to be part of the solution for environmental and societal challenges. This role involves strategic planning, monitoring, analysis, and implementation of sustainable digital practices across a variety of vertical domains. It requires skills and competence spanning science, engineering, and economics, as well as an open and flexible mindset, guided by an unbending vision and commitment to the principles and practice of environmental sustainability.

As a Digital Sustainability Expert at Digital for Planet, you will also be comfortable managing and supervising the implementation of research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission, particularly within the context of the Horizon Europe programme.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

● Managing the development and implementation of environmental sustainability strategies or methodologies in assigned EC-funded projects.

● Monitoring and analysing EU-level policy initiatives that would impact digital sustainability.

● Collaborating closely with stakeholders and experts to develop comprehensive roadmaps and policy recommendations aimed at addressing digital environmental sustainability challenges, leveraging latest research insights. Utilising specialised knowledge in environmental/climate science to inform the design and implementation of agendas,whitepapers, and/or strategies within assigned EC projects, ensuring alignment with cutting-edge research in the digital sustainability domain.

● Leveraging expertise in environmental/climate science to assess the environmental impact and sustainability of business models and strategies proposed within R&I projects, and providing recommendations towards exploitation and go-to-market approaches compatible with sustainable development and planetary boundaries.

● Organising specialised discussions, workshops, and events with a variety of stakeholders across the digital and sustainability domains, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among key actors.

● Leading or supporting the full cycle preparation of EC-funded R&I proposals with a strong emphasis on incorporating scientific insights from environmental/climate science into project design and objectives linked to digital technology design and innovation.

● Representing Digital for Planet in R&I projects, consortia, meetings, events.

● Overseeing the management of assigned work packages across EC-funded R&I projects.

● Proactively identifying research gaps and business opportunities in digital environmental sustainability, and contributing to the development of innovative research proposals and partnerships.

In close collaboration with the rest of the Digital for Planet team, which includes individuals with backgrounds in project management, policy, community building and communications, you will contribute to defining and maintaining the organisation’s image across digital sustainability-related activities in accordance with the mission and vision of Digital for Planet. Close collaboration is also expected with suitable activities and work led by Martel Innovate, the founding member of Digital for Planet.

You will actively engage in a friendly international environment, which will involve participating in international R&I projects across Europe (and beyond from time to time). In this respect, some travelling within (and rarely outside Europe) might be needed.

FIT FOR THE CHALLENGE

With a background rooted in environmental science and/or digital sustainability, you will be well-equipped to tackle the following responsibilities:

● Solid understanding of the environmental challenges facing society now and, in the future, with innovative and cross-disciplinary solutions.

● Understanding and experience in one or more of circular economic thinking, environmental and carbon impact assessment, regenerative systems, ecological dynamics, and/or complex systems theory.

● High-level understanding of the impact of digital technologies on environment, society, and culture, including their associated effects and consequences.

● Proven experience in managing and implementing activities as a digital sustainability specialist in EC-funded projects.

● Excellent English communication skills, encompassing both written and spoken proficiency, alongside experience in technical/scientific writing and delivering technical oral presentations.

● Proficiency in negotiating and collaborating with international partners and clients, coupled with strong organisational skills.

● Experience in any of the following areas: green technologies, environmental impact assessment, sustainable digital supply chains, greenhouse gas emissions, standardisation, environmental modelling, circular economy, geospatial analysis, 5/6G and AI sustainability, digital innovation are considered as a strong plus.

● PhD / MSc in environmental/climate science or ICT related domain is preferred.

More specifically, the ideal candidate should possess the following:

● Able to perform in a multicultural environment (sometimes under time pressure) and to deliver results in a demanding and fast-paced environment.

● Fresh thinking and innovation-friendly spirit.

● Self-driven, responsible, and able to take ownership of projects and duties.

● Solid analytical thinking and problem-solving capability.

● Ability to travel approximately 5-6 times per year, primarily withinEurope.

● Attentive to details.

The following qualifications and experience are highlight desirable:

● Educational or professional experience covering a combination of environmental/climate science and ICT/digital innovation, or related fields.

● A master’s degree (or equivalent) in Environmental/Climate Science / Complex Systems / Nonlinear Dynamics / Digital Transformation/Digital Innovation.

● Proven experience in the context of EC funded projects.

● Proven experience in writing successful proposals for EC funded programs.

● Previous experience in the sustainability/digital sustainability field.
