Künstlerische Leitung (m/w/d).

für das biennale internationale Theaterfestival Basel 2028.

Das Theaterfestival Basel eröffnet alle zwei Jahre die Theatersaison in der Region Basel. An zwölf12 Tagen im August und September präsentiert es einem Publikum aller Generationen internationale Theater-, Tanz- und Performance-Formate. Gastgebende r sind die Theaterhäuser der Region: junges theater basel, Kaserne Basel, Neues Theater Dornach, ROXY Birsfelden, Theater Basel und Vorstadttheater Basel. Dazu gibt es ein vielfältiges Vermittlungs- und Rahmenprogramm mit Konzerten, Workshops, Panels und Gesprächen an den beteiligten Häusern und im Festivalpavillon im Stadtraum.

Ihre Aufgaben

• Konzeption, Gestaltung und Programmierung des Festivals
• Co-Leitung des Gesamtfestivals zusammen mit bestehender Geschäftsführung
• Gestaltung des Rahmenprogramms, des Festivalpavillons und des Vermittlungsangebotes in Zusammenarbeit mit einem Team erfahrener Kulturvermittler*innen
• Akquise von Drittmitteln in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Geschäftsführer
• Strategische und inhaltliche Weiterentwicklung des Festivals
• Begleitende Zusammenarbeit und Kontaktpflege mit den ausrichtenden lokalen Partneriinstitutionen des Festivals (junges theater basel, Kaserne Basel, ROXY Birsfelden, Neues Theater Dornach, Theater Basel und Vorstadttheater Basel)

Sie bringen mit

• Gute Kenntnisse der internationalen Tanz-, Theater- und Performance-Szene für erwachsenes und junges Publikum, insbesondere der internationalen freien Szene
• Kuratorische und programmatorische Erfahrung im Kulturbetrieb, insbesondere gute Kenntnisse der internationalen freien Theater-, Tanz- und Performanceszene
• Leitungserfahrung

Wir bieten

Die Findungskommission wählt bis zum 08. Februar 02.2026 aus allen fristgerecht eingegangenen Bewerbungen Kandidat*innen für die nächste Bewerbungsrunde aus. Diese erhalten eine Aufforderung zur Einreichung eines Konzepts für das Theaterfestival 2028. Für die Arbeit am Konzept erhalten die ausgewählten Bewerber*innen eine Aufwandsentschädigung. Stichtag für die Einreichung des Konzepts ist der 15. März 2026.

Auf Einladung erfolgen dann Auswahlgespräche mit den verbleibenden Bewerber*innen in der 2. Aprilwoche.

Alle eingereichten Bewerbungen werden vertraulich behandelt. Aktuelle Mitarbeitende des Festivals - mit Ausnahme des Geschäftsführers - haben keine Einsicht in die eingereichten Unterlagen; gleiches gilt für Mitarbeitende der Partnerhäuser.

The International Theaterfestival Basel is looking for a qualified, well-connected individual to join the team on 1 November 2026, for the 2028 edition of the festival, in the role of

Artistic Director.

Every two years, Theaterfestival Basel heralds the start of the theatre season in the Basel region. Throughout twelve days of August and September, it presents international theatre, dance and performance formats to multi-generational audiences. The festival is hosted by theatres from throughout the region: junges theater basel, Kaserne Basel, Neues Theater Dornach, ROXY Birsfelden, Theater Basel and Vorstadttheater Basel. Moreover, there is a varied programme of educational and supporting events, including concerts, workshops, panels and discussions at participating venues and the festival pavilion in Basel city centre.

Your responsibilities

• Concept, design and programming of the festival
• Co-management of the entire festival together with the managing director
• Design of the supporting events, the festival pavilion and the educational programme in collaboration with a team of experienced cultural educators
• Acquisition of third-party funding in cooperation with the managing director
• Strategic and content-related development of the festival
• Accompanying cooperation and maintaining contact with the local partner institutions (junges theater basel, Kaserne Basel, ROXY Birsfelden, Neues Theater Dornach, Theater Basel and Vorstadttheater Basel)

What you offer

• Good knowledge of the international dance, theatre and performance scene for adult and young audiences, especially the international independent scene
• Curatorial and programming experience within the cultural sector
• Management experience
• Interest in and willingness to engage with stakeholders and institutions of cultural institutions in Basel, especially with the festival's partner venues
• Practical experience in applying for grants, acquiring third-party funding and planning projects and events
• Willingness to work regularly in Basel and to go on international trips
• A good command of written and spoken German and English is advantageous
• Ability to work independently in a structured manner and effectively as part of a team

• Extensive creative freedom in the artistic and content-related design of the festival

• Permanent position in the annual working time model (average 40%), contract period: 1 November 2026 – 31 October 2028

• Option to extend position beyond the 2028 festival

Procedure

The selection committee will make its final decision by 8 February 2026, candidates for the next round will be selected from all the applications received by the aforesaid deadline. These candidates will be invited to submit a concept for the 2028 festival.

The selected applicants will receive an expense allowance for their work on the concept. The deadline for submitting the concept is 15 March 2026.

Interviews will then be held with the remaining applicants during the second week of April 2026.

All the applications submitted will be treated with the strictest confidentially. Current festival employees, except for the managing director, shall not have access to the submitted documents; the same applies to all employees of the partner organisations.
