About this offer
This position will act as a technical advisor to support national authorities and partners on mechanical innovation, particularly the application of heavy roller assemblies for rapidly returning land to communities to improve operational efficiency of mine action in Ukraine. In concrete terms the role focusses on deployment of mechanical innovation, particularly mechanical rollers, supported by and in line with applicable national standards and guidelines.
Main Responsibilities
- Work closely with the GICHD Country Programme Team and other Geneva-based thematic experts
- Maintain and strengthen existing partnerships with relevant Ukrainian government Ministries and institutions, mine action organisations and other stakeholders that are active in mine action, focusing on mechanical innovations.
- Help to ensure autonomous and semi-autonomous rollers are rigorously tested and effectively integrated into national demining operations as a key tool for confidence building, technical survey and any other areas mechanical land release in Ukraine.
- Facilitate the integration of roller technology/mechanical innovation into Ukraine’s demining procedures and policies.
- Facilitate international and national knowledge exchange by ensuring that best practices and lessons learned from Ukraine’s roller deployment are shared globally and that Ukraine benefits from international expertise.
- Run a technical session focused on operational deployment, safety considerations, and technical standards for autonomous and semi-autonomous rollers.
Additional Duties
- Act as a technical in-country focal point for the GICHD in Ukraine;
- Make suggestions for improvements.
- Monitor the security situation in Ukraine and consult with the GICHD.
- Monitor political and operational developments, allowing for potential adaptations of support where necessary.
- Fulfil other technical tasks as assigned by line manager.
Qualifications and professional experience
- A master’s degree in innovation management, business administration, entrepreneurship, engineering, or a related field.
- Proven track record of at least 3 years in innovation management, mine action, mechanical asset deployment
- Strong understanding of Ukrainian mine action programme, demining operations.
- Experience in management or implementation of land release/mine action field operations/deployment of mechanical assets and/or innovative solutions in Ukraine or other contexts
- Experience in delivering training courses/workshops to a diverse audience.
Knowledge, skills and competencies
- Fluency and efficient communication skills in spoken and written Ukrainian plus a working knowledge of English
- Proven knowledge of humanitarian mine action sector.
- Diplomatic with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to coordinate simultaneous activities/projects
- Effective writing and oral communication skills
- Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with a wide range of stakeholders
- Knowledge of UN agencies, relevant national authorities, NGOs and humanitarian organizations

Travel requirements
- Expected to travel up to 20% of the working time including to areas affected by explosive ordnance, with low-medium-high risk environment
Remarks
- The present Terms of Reference may be modified and/or amended at any time in close coordination.
- The incumbent is expected to travel to work in Kyiv on a full-time basis.
