Job Description
The Engineering Department (EN) at CERN pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community.
The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which owns, maintains and develops the 40-year-old know-how on the mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly of accelerator and detector devices. The EN Department is seeking an engineer with experience in Non-Destructive Testing ( NDT ) to join the Materials, Metrology and NDT Section in the MME Group.
In this role, you will develop and apply state of the art advanced NDT techniques to inspect critical materials and assemblies for CERN's accelerators and detectors. Your work will directly support the reliability and safety of CERN's cutting-edge physics projects.
Your responsibilities:
- Collaborate with an experienced NDT team and participate in inspection activities involving ultrasonic testing, digital radiography and computed tomography.
- Optimise Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) techniques for medium/thin austenitic welds to improve inspection reliability and expand current application domains.
- Develop the use of PAUT probes in an immersion setup to enhance inspection flexibility and capabilities.
- Support the implementation and development of an innovative mobile system for radiography and tomography based on collaborative robots. This first in the field system will enable in-situ inspections of accelerator components in the LHC tunnel and of medium-sized components in a bunker.
- Communicate inspection results to project engineers and document testing protocols and findings.
Your profile:
- Experience in ultrasonic or digital radiographic techniques for NDT, with familiarity in both areas preferred.
- ISO 9712 certifications would be an advantage.
- Holding a valid certificate by Swiss or French authorities for handling X-ray electric generators for industrial radiography (CAMARI X by IRSN-ASNR/France, training SPG-SPZ-f by SUVA/Switzerland), would be an advantage.
Skills:
- Configure parameters for manual, encoded, and automated PAUT systems, and use software for inspection simulation and result visualisation (e.g., UTstudio+, WeldSight, OmniPC, NDT SetupBuilder).
- Set up acquisitions and use 2D/3D visualization software for digital radiography and computed tomography (e.g., Industrex, D-TecX, Sherlock NDT, MetrotomOS, VGStudio).
- Familiarity with material science, welding processes, and international NDT standards.
- Strong technical writing skills for procedures and reports.
- Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State .
- You have a professional background in Materials Science/Welding Engineer/NDT (or a related field) and have either:
- a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
