The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.
For the Light-Matter Interactions group in the Laboratory for Materials Simulations (LMS) of the PSI Center for Scientific Computing, Theory, and Data (CSD) we are looking for a
- PhD Thesis computational condensed matter physics
- Work out quantum geometric principles of strong light-matter interaction
- Perform first-principle simulations of light-induced dynamics in solids
- Perform high-throughput calculations of materials suitable for Floquet engineering
- Investigation of driving protocols with synthetic light fields
- Collaboration with experimental groups
- Support teaching activities generally at the institution of the thesis advisor
- Higher education in theoretical physics at the master level
- A strong background in theoretical condensed matter physics or related disciplines
- Experience with first-principle simulations (DFT, Wannier, many-body methods, etc.) is an asset
- Programming skills in Python / Fortran / C++
- Good command of English and excellent communication skills
- The ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with both theoretical and experimental partners is essential
