Electrical engineer for safety systems (EN-AA-CSE-2024-77-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an electrical engineer, experienced in the design of low-voltage systems and safety systems, and the management of projects/contracts in these technical domains? Are you interested in becoming an expert in Safety systems? Join the Critical Systems Engineering section in the Alarms and Access group (EN-AA) of the Engineering department and contribute with your skills and expertise to deploy new Safety systems and consolidate the existing ones. You would be leading several projects in parallel and lean on CERN services and contractors to ensure their accomplishment. Furthermore, you would be involved in the design of smart and robust solutions for non-standard installations, such as long underground tunnels, radioactive environment, areas with very strong magnetic fields, electromagnetic interferences, and many others – Take part!

Functions

As an electrical engineer working on a CERN consolidation programme of its personal safety system, you will manage or participate to the design and the implementation of several safety systems in parallel, for new installations and/or the consolidation of existing ones and take responsibility for the results. You will master applicable regulations, ensure their application and meet requirements set by hazards and risk analysis. Working with industrial suppliers you will choose the appropriate solutions and components and integrate them in the CERN environment. You will be expected to learn using, configuring and programming products from different vendors and will work in close collaboration with the maintenance team, installation team, as well as CERN health and safety inspectors.

Your functions will include:

  • Conceptualization and design of safety systems tailored for radiation facilities, ensuring system integration, correct application of safety standards and regulations such as fire and gas detection standards, audible evacuation systems, installation rules from the host states, and functional safety standards (IEC 61508/61511) and CERN safety standards.
  • Drawing-up of test protocols and supervision of tests and system commissioning, verification, and validation to guarantee seamless deployment and operation.
  • Writing of technical specifications (e.g new cable) and of technical notes (e.g prototyping results) and ensuring communication in safety and technical committees.
  • Managing tendering processes and subsequent industrial support contracts.
  • Ensure the implementation of several projects in parallel in due time and within budgetfrom the definition of the needs to the installation and commissioning and optimizing risks and costs.
  • Taking active part in industrial collaborations with safety system manufacturers and leading the construction of prototypes whenever required.
  • Following up of technology and standards evolutions to propose best renewal and consolidation strategies.
  • Taking an active role in the maintenance and operation and intervening in case of troubleshooting.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design of low-voltage and very low-voltage electrical installations and analogue signal treatment.
  • Proven experience in writing Technical Specification and Contract Management.
  • Experience in Project Management of safety systems with a proven track record.
  • Experience with evacuation and voice alarm safety systems (e.g. EN 54-16) would be an advantage.
  • Experience with the application of FR/CH/INTERNATIONAL safety regulations (e.g. ATEX, APSD R7, etc.) and safety standards (e.g IEC61508/IEC61511, EN-54) would be an advantage.
  • Experience of CAD software packages such as Autocad, Autocad Electrical and CATIA would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Construction, test and commissioning of electrical circuits and networks.
  • Design and modelling of low-voltage electrical circuits and networks.
  • Drafting of commercial documents for a supply or a service contract.
  • Knowledge and application of electromagnetic compatibility, interference and susceptibility.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting. Taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Solving Problems: finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available.
  • Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: readily accepting new tasks or work/projects. Adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
