PhD Position in Enzyme-Based Peptide Synthesis
School of Life Sciences FHNW, Institute for Chemis and Bioanalytics
Teaching, research and practice - we connect
Your tasks
The Shahgaldian group at the Institute of Chemis and Bioanalytics develops enzyme-based functional systems at the interface of (nano)chemis, biocatalysis, and protein science. These systems are applied to challenges in pharmaceutical research and related areas, using approaches from synthetic chemis, bioconjugate chemis, nanotechnology, and enzyme engineering.
Within this PhD project, the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of the University of Basel and will carry out a range of research and academic activities, including:
- Design and experimental implementation of enzyme-based strategies for peptide synthesis
- Experimental work in synthetic and analytical chemis, including product characterization (NMR, LC-MS, spectrophotometric measurements) and reaction optimization
- Contribution to the design, optimization and experimental evaluation of engineered enzymes
- Contribution to teaching, supervision, and group activities according to institutional regulation
- Preparation of scientific publications and presentations at conferences
Your profile
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student with a strong passion for the molecular sciences, spanning chemis and biochemis, who is eager to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. The project offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with a broad European network of specialists and to contribute to cutting-edge research at the interface of chemis, biocatalysis, and protein science. Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Master's degree in Chemis, Biochemis or a related field with hands-on experience in synthetic chemis
- Strong interest in protein science and biocatalysis, with a willingness to develop skills in this area
- Experience with molecular biology, protein (bio)chemis or peptide synthesis is advantageous
- Ability to work independently and as part of multicultural and interdisciplinary team
- Excellent command of written and spoken English, German is advantageous
Your prospects:
The FHNW School of Life Sciences offers state-of-the-art technical, laboratory and office facilities. Contributing to the school's highly motivating working environment - which is second to none - are its collaboration with a large number of companies and institutions in Switzerland and abroad, a widely varied programme of scientific events, and daily contact with young students in research and teaching. The FHNW is also committed to equal opportunities and the compatibility of private and professional life.
Your benefits:
Wide range of university sports
Cultural programme of lectures, concerts, theatre and films
Established implementation of equal pay
Targeted promotion of doctoral projects
Annual working time (42 hours/week) with the option of part-time and teleworking
Mentoring programme for career development
