The Senior Medical Director, Oncology Clinical Development is a senior physician leader within the clinical programme team, providing medical oversight, strategic clinical insight, and a patient-centred perspective across the design, conduct, and interpretation of clinical studies. This role ensures that medical considerations, patient safety, and clinical integrity are consistently applied across studies within a programme.
Operating within the clinical strategy defined by the Clinical Development Lead (CDL), the Senior Medical Director partners closely with the Senior Scientist and cross-functional teams to guide the integration of physician expertise into study execution and programme-level decision-making. The role serves as a senior member of the Clinical Matrix Team (CMT), contributing to complex clinical decisions, regulatory interactions, and external scientific engagement.
The Senior Medical Director provides oversight and guidance to Medical Directors within the programme, supporting consistency of clinical judgement, safety evaluation, and medical interpretation across studies.
In This Role You Will:

Serve as a senior physician leader within the clinical programme, providing medical oversight and clinical insight across study design, conduct, and data interpretation

Provide guidance on medical monitoring and safety oversight across studies, ensuring consistent application of clinical judgement and patient safety standards

Interpret complex clinical and safety data, generating insights that inform programme-level decisions led by the CDL
-
Partner with the Senior Scientist and cross-functional teams to ensure medical considerations are integrated across study execution and programme delivery

Provide senior medical input into protocol development and study design, ensuring clinical relevance and patient-centred design within the clinical strategy defined by the CDL

Serve as a senior member of the CMT, influencing study-level and programme-level decision-making
-
Engage with investigators, Key External Experts (KEEs), and scientific leaders to support external engagement and represent the programme at advisory boards, steering committees, and scientific forums

Provide medical guidance and mentorship to Medical Directors within the programme, supporting consistency and development of clinical capability
Detailed Responsibilities:
Medical Monitoring and Safety Oversight

Guide interpretation of safety data in collaboration with pharmacovigilance, supporting signal detection, escalation, and benefit–risk evaluation across the programme

Participate in and contribute to safety review forums (e.g., SRT, IDMC), providing senior physician perspective on complex safety questions

Ensure medical monitoring approaches are aligned across studies and consistent with regulatory and organisational standards
Study Design and Execution

Provide senior medical input into protocol development across studies, ensuring clinical relevance, feasibility, and alignment with the clinical strategy defined by the CDL

Guide clinical aspects of study design and protocol implementation, particularly for complex, high-risk, or multi-study programmes

Support resolution of complex medical questions arising during study conduct, applying clinical judgement to inform programme-level decision-making

Ensure consistency of medical considerations across multiple studies within the programme
Data Interpretation and Scientific Contribution

Interpret complex clinical data across studies, integrating findings to inform programme-level insights on safety, efficacy, and patient impact

Contribute to programme-level data interpretation and support CDL-led benefit–risk assessment and clinical positioning

Guide development of scientific communications, including publications, congress materials, and clinical summaries

Maintain deep understanding of disease biology, evolving treatment paradigms, and competitive landscape to inform clinical interpretation and programme strategy
Regulatory and External Engagement

Contribute senior medical expertise to regulatory interactions and Health Authority discussions, including responses to complex clinical and safety queries

Represent the programme at advisory boards, steering committees, and external scientific forums, providing senior physician perspective on clinical data and programme direction

Engage with KEEs and scientific collaborators to support programme development, scientific exchange, and external credibility

Lead or contribute to the clinical and technical diligence assessment of business development opportunities
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Clinical Matrix Team

Serve as a senior member of the Clinical Matrix Team (CMT), influencing cross-functional alignment and programme-level decision-making

Contribute medical expertise to disease area strategy, integrated evidence planning, and Medical Affairs discussions

Collaborate across functions to ensure alignment on safety, data interpretation, and clinical positioning across the programme

Lead or contribute to Oncology Clinical Development-wide initiatives and workstreams
People Leadership & Capability Development

Provide oversight, guidance, and mentorship to Medical Directors within the programme, supporting consistency and quality of medical input across studies

Support development of clinical capability within the medical team, including coaching on medical monitoring, data interpretation, and external engagement

Contribute to talent development, performance discussions, and capability building within Oncology Clinical Development
Why You?
Basic Qualification
We are seeking professionals with the following required skills and qualifications to help us achieve our goals

MD (or equivalent medical degree) with board certification or eligibility in oncology, haematology, or a related specialty
-
Significant clinical and/or pharmaceutical experience in oncology clinical development, with depth across multiple studies or programmes
-
Demonstrated experience in medical monitoring, safety evaluation, and clinical data interpretation across clinical studies
-
Strong understanding of clinical development processes, GCP, ICH guidelines, and global regulatory frameworks
-
Experience operating within cross-functional matrix teams and contributing to complex clinical and programme-level decisions
-
Strong scientific communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence internal and external audiences
Preferred Qualification
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus

Deep experience in oncology clinical development across multiple studies or programmes, including Phase I–III
-
Experience contributing to or leading aspects of regulatory interactions (e.g., IND, scientific advice, NDA/MAA)

Demonstrated experience engaging with KEEs, advisory boards, and scientific communities in oncology

Track record of scientific publications and congress presentations
-
Deep understanding of oncology disease biology and the evolving treatment landscape across solid tumours and/or haematological malignancies

Experience mentoring or providing oversight to other physicians within a clinical development organisation

Experience contributing to clinical and technical diligence for business development opportunities
Work Location and Arrangement
This career opportunity requires an on-site office presence (minimum of two days per week) at one of GSK’s Switzerland (Zug), Poland (Warsaw), UK (Stevenage or London HQ) or US (PA or MA) sites.
