Ein spezielles Angebot der Kantonsschule Trogen
Immersionsunterricht
Seit dem Schuljahr 2016/17 bieten wir interessierten Schülerinnen und Schülern die Möglichkeit,
eine zweisprachige Matura Deutsch-Englisch zu absolvieren. In dieser Klasse wird immersiv
unterrichtet. Immersion bedeutet Eintauchen in etwas, in diesem Fall in die englische Sprache. Ein
mit den Jahren wachsender Teil der Fächer wird in Englisch erteilt.
Der immersive Unterricht führt zu einem vertieften, intensiven und natürlichen Um-gang mit der
Weltsprache Englisch. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler verbessern ihre mündliche und schriftliche
Sprachkompe-tenz. Sie lernen die englische Sprache als Instrument zum Wissenserwerb in
anderen Fächern kennen.
Sich auf Englisch auszutauschen, zu diskutieren und zu argumentieren, wird bald zu einer
Selbstverständlichkeit. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schulstoff in einer fremden Sprache
erfordert hohe Konzentration, Sprachgeschick und einen gewissen Mehraufwand. Der Entscheid
die immersive Klasse zu besuchen sollte deshalb wohlüberlegt gefällt und die
Leistungsbereitschaft realistisch eingeschätzt werden.
Warum Englisch?
In Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Technik ist Englisch international die am häufigsten verwendete
Sprache. Deshalb führen auch in der Schweiz viele Universitäten und Hochschulen in
verschiedenen Studien-gängen immer mehr Lehrveranstaltungen in englischer Sprache durch.

Unterricht und Dauer
An der KST werden Biologie, Wirtschaft und Recht, Chemie, Geschichte, Mathematik, Sport und im
Abschlussjahr ein interdisziplinäres Fach in englischer Sprache unterrichtet. Auch die
Maturaarbeit kann auf Englisch geschrieben und präsentiert werden.
Der Beginn des Unterrichtes in englischer Sprache erfolgt gestaffelt. Mit unserer Stundentafel
überschreiten wir die von der Schweizerischen Maturitätskommission (SMK) mindestens
geforderten 800 immersiv unterrichteten Lektionen deutlich.
Den höheren Anforderungen wird in der Anfangsphase der einzelnen Sachfächer mit einer
Zusatzlektion Rechnung getragen. Daraus resultiert eine stundenmässige Mehrbelastung der
Lernenden.
Zielgruppe
Das Angebot ist unabhängig von der Wahl der Schiene im Mittelgymnasium oder der Wahl des
Schwerpunktfachs im Obergymnasium.
Es richtet sich an leistungsbereite und motivierte Lernende, die sich - neben der regulären
Maturitätsausbildung - mit Freude in die englische Sprache vertiefen.
Aufnahmebedingungen
Die Kantonsschule Trogen führt jedes Jahr eine schienengemischte Immersionsklasse.
Lernende, die sich für die zweisprachige Matura interessieren und in der Aufnahmeprüfung in
allen Fächern eine genügende Note erreichen, erhalten eine Einladung sich für die
Immersionsklasse zu bewerben.
Der Einstieg in die immersiv geführte Klasse erfolgt mit Eintritt in die Kantonsschule Trogen und
verpflichtet bis zur Matura zum Besuch des Immersionsunterrichts. Über Eintritte zu einem
späteren Zeitpunkt entscheidet die Schulleitung.
Kosten und Besonderheiten
Die Kosten für die Lehrmittel gehen wie in allen andern Klassen zulasten der Lernenden.
Die Lernenden verpflichten sich am Ende des 2. Schuljahres zu einem obligatorischen
vierwöchigen Sprachaufenthalt im englischsprachigen Raum. Dieser Aufenthalt findet zur Hälfte
in der Schulzeit und zur Hälfte während der Sommerferien statt und wird von den
Erziehungsberechtigten gemäss inhaltlicher Vorgaben selber organisiert. Die Schule leistet bei
Bedarf Hilfe bei der Auswahl von geeigneten Instituten.
Die Kosten werden von den Erziehungsberechtigten getragen. Gemäss Erfahrungen kommt ein
Aufenthalt in England auf ca. CHF 3'000.- zu stehen.
Aus stundenplantechnischen Gründen muss mit Einschränkungen beim Besuch von Freifächern
gerechnet werden.
1. All About Immersion
Why study immersively?
The global spread and importance of English cannot be denied. In addition to its presence within
the worlds of business and finance, English has been widely adopted as the lingua franca by the
international science community.
As a result, a growing number of university courses both at undergraduate level but especially at
Masters level and above in Switzerland, will be taught in English. In order to meet the language
demands of such studies, the universities have expressed the importance of students being much
better equipped when they start university.
Therefore, the immersion programme serves as the ideal preparation for such courses or opens
up many more opportunities to study in the USA, the UK, Ireland and Australia among others.
The main concept underlying the programme is that you are learning the language naturally
through performing tasks and getting things done, and where the focus is still on the subject and
not the language itself.
What you can expect from immersion
Having collected data for several years from placement test results, an immersion class typically
finishes the programme with an advanced C1 level (or higher). This is in contrast to the achieved
level of B2 by a regular class.
Despite initial concerns, numerous research studies have confirmed that immersion students'
subject knowledge does not suffer as a result of being taught in English.
However, what we cannot guarantee is a native-like accent at the end of the programme. Even if
all your immersion teachers were native speakers (which the majority are not), it is probable that
they all have different accents, too. The vast array of native and non-native English accents
around the world is something you will have to get used to anyway.
If you really want to develop a specific native accent, then you need to fully immerse yourself in
that country for an extended period of time.
What teachers expect from you
That you make as much effort as possible to communicate in English at all times during the
lesson. This therefore includes the asking and answering of questions, as well as when
performing group work.
That you assist your classmates with the language whenever appropriate and that you are
willing to read longer English texts even if they include technical terms.
That even if you are not sure how to say something, you still try as it is better to speak with a
few mistakes than be perfectly silent.
3. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will there be a lot of extra work because the lessons are in English?
At the beginning, there will be more work because there are many new terms to get used to but
experience has shown that students have adapted to the new situation very quickly.
Q: Will it be a problem if I do not know the German for specific terms?
Usually not but the German equivalents of key terms will be mentioned, especially during the
earlier stages of a subject or when the terms are very different.
Q: Will there be any type of language stay during the programme?
Yes, every student is expected to do a four week's language course in an English speaking
country. This will be in the last two weeks of the 2nd year and the first two weeks of the summer
holidays.
Q: What have former immersion students enjoyed the most about the programme?
That with time they were able to speak more fluently and without fear of speaking in a foreign
language in front of others. They also started to think in English, meaning that for some it
became more like a second first language.
Q: Will immersion teachers be correcting my language errors?
The important point here is that the focus is on the subject in contrast to the accuracy of the
language. However, teachers will intervene when they deem it necessary, say for more serious
and repeating errors that could lead to misunderstanding. This is why the English lessons are
vitally important because there you will receive the structured language instruction required for
your immersion lessons.
Q: Will I have to write my Matura Paper in English?
Even though this is not compulsory, it is something we would strongly recommend, as it is an
excellent opportunity to write such a paper in English. You will also be given support in the form
of a workshop highlighting the main points about writing a paper in English, in addition to general
language assistance should any problems arise.
Q: Will I be sitting any of the Cambridge exams during the programme and why?
Yes, all students will be expected to sit the Cambridge Advanced Exam at the end of the first term
of the 3rd year. Additionally, students might want to do an optional course towards the Cambridge
Proficiency Exam in the 4th year.
Q: What did former students of other schools say when asked if they would do the programme
again?
Almost all have said that they would definitely do it again because it was an excellent experience.
