Your responsibilities

The CERN Experimental Physic department has a strategic R&D programme on technologies for future experiments. This initiative covers detector mechanics, electronics, software and magnets for new experiments and detector upgrades in High Energy Physicsbeyond LHC phase II. In this framework the work package related to Mechanics addresses the challenges to develop completely new Detector designs based on advanced structural and thermal materials, served by robotic systems for their installation and maintenance.

Competing requirements like minimum space use, thermal constraints, high precision, low mass, and radiation hardness drive this Development. The use of advanced Carbon composite material compared to standard metals is one of the design choices to meet these requirements . Among the different Mechanics developments, the replacement of the large metallic cryostats in the Detector magnets and calorimeters with a carbon composite design represents an unprecedented challenge.

As a mechanical engineer in the CERN EP R&D, you will be part of the group in charge of this development with responsibilities in the design, structural analysis, materials, and process choices.

The development targets the construction of a large scale demonstrator that will require production follow-up with the implementation of suitable quality assurance procedures and test benches to verify the thermo-mechanical performance of the final assemblies.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience in the design of composite components and systems. A good understanding of tracking detector mechanics and knowledge of cryostat system would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of CAD software for 3D modelling (ideally Catia V5) and the production of 2D technical drawings according to the relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerances (e.g. ISO Geometrical Product Specifications).
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience in thermal and mechanical testing is essential
  • Rigorous and organized approach to work, producing quality results at first attempt.
  • Work well in teams. .
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineer (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

This position requires:

  • Interventions in underground installations.

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
