With over 850 indigenous languages, and one of the most ethnically diverse populations, widespread poverty and gender inequality make it hard for many children to realize their rights. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), UNICEF’s works effectively both ‘upstream’ (with governments) and ‘downstream’ (at the grassroots level) to carry out its mission through a programme of cooperation jointly developed with the government guides our work in the country.

How can you make a difference?

Under the close supervision of the Communication Specialist, the incumbent will support in the planning, development and implementing of a social media strategy, aligned with the Communication and Advocacy Strategy for promoting the rights of children and partnerships/fundraising objectives. This will ensure the expansion of Papua New Guinea Country Office’s digital presence per the needs of Country Programme (CP) and UNICEF´s global digital media guidelines.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks are as follows;

Support in the development of the digital strategy

• Support in the planning and development, maintaining and updating the country digital outreach strategy and associated work plan in line with UNICEF’s objectives and priorities, including messaging, audience identification, choice of social media platforms, monitoring and evaluation of impact, success and opportunities for improvement; on-going refinement of the strategy.

• Ensure on-going assessment of social media trends and practices and their application to the evolving strategy.

• Timely and effective assistance and support are provided in developing, drafting and maintaining data of contact information in digital platforms.

Support in the implementation of the digital strategy

• In close coordination with the supervisor, maintain and update the digital strategy and associated work plan. Strategy and work plan include assessment; objectives; target audiences; type of engagement; key performance indicators; monitoring and evaluation of engagement, success and opportunity for improvement; on-going refinement of the strategy.

• Support in the management of UNICEF Papua New Guinea’s presence in social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, and other similar community sites, posting on relevant blogs, seeding content into social applications as needed.

• Work with Programmes and Communications to develop a weekly and monthly content management plan. Advise on matters related to content and overall user experience of social media sites. Help refine and grow content on social media platforms.

• Maintain and systematically grow UNICEF’s current on-line community across all platforms. Identify and create conversations around issues related to UNICEF’s mandate and keep the on-line community engaged in a dynamic, interactive and meaningful way.

• Answer questions and manage the flow of information in social platforms. Work to ensure consistency across all social media platforms.

• Identify new opportunities to continually improve the social media presence to engage supporters and nurture them into followers.

Support in the preparation of online campaigns

• Support in the development and implementation of digital components of communication, advocacy and fundraising campaigns. Manage social media campaigns and day-to-day activities: drafting content, moderation and evaluation.

• Work closely with the supervisor on the use and appropriateness of global communication materials such as publications, images and multimedia products.

• Work closely with Programmes and Corporate Alliances to ensure the online strategy reflects the components’ objectives and the appropriateness of materials produced such as publications, images and multimedia products under the supervision of the Communication Specialist.

• With approval of supervisor help select and supervises suppliers and agencies for application development, design and production to use in social and civic media campaigns.

• Improve coordination, promotion and interaction between social media followers and donors.

Support the execution of e-marketing and e-fundraising initiatives for social media.

• Measure and report on social media campaigns using a range of reporting tools

Manage country office website

• Manage the UNICEF Papua New Guinea website, ensuring regular and frequent updates. Manages the CMS (Drupal, system to include text, image, video, audio and animations.

• Prepare monthly reports and evaluation activities to ensure the use, effectiveness and impact of the website. Elaborate and implement recommendations to improve the website.

Support in monitoring and evaluation

•Regular monitoring and evaluation of digital tasks are undertaken according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of country communication efforts. Ensure results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.

• Assist in coordinating appropriate audience research and compiling and analyzing relevant data.

• Support the use and appropriateness of global digital communication information such as publications, images and multimedia products.

• Ensure good quality data collection, analysis and evaluation and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies.

• Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences as directed by supervisor.

•Provide photography and videography support

•Manage photography and videography requirements to support social media content and campaigns

Provide administrative assistance

• Provide administrative assistance related to record keeping of digital files, images and documents.

• Support the programmes day-to-day functioning by aiding in the processing of administrative requests (payments, purchases, record keeping).

• Support other related duties as assigned

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of secondary education preferably supplemented with courses in social communication, digital communication, social marketing, multimedia or relevant field. University degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in Communications or related area is an asset.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant working experience maintaining digital communication, including social media, marketing and/or (youth) engagement, with social media tools and platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Experience in planning, implementing and assessing social media strategies will be considered an asset. Work experience in an international organization or UN agency is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
