Mechanical Technician for Cooling Systems (EP-ADO-PO-2024-78-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a Mechanical Technician, experienced in cooling systems and/or in fluidic system’s pipe assemblies, with a passion for challenging problems? Then take this opportunity to further develop your knowledge and skills in the cooling systems construction, testing, qualification and operation for one of the world's most complex and exciting scientific experiments.

You will join the:

  • Experimental Physics (EP) Department which carries out research in the field of experimental particle physics, standing as an important reference for the European physics community.
  • ADO group, in charge of the coordination of all the engineering activities and, in charge of ATLAS Detector Operation during the run (http://atlas.cern/).
  • PO section: is the ATLAS Technical Coordination Project Office, which is in charge of the design, the integration, the installation, and the maintenance coordination of many infrastructure facilities for ATLAS Experiment.

Currently the PO section is facing new technical challenges to prepare the Long Shut down 3 (LS3) (2026-2028).  ATLAS detector will be upgraded with new detector systems, which will require intensive field activities.

Various detectors require active cold or warm cooling systems in range of several to hundreds of kilowatts cooling power.  The detector cooling systems operate 24/7 keeping the electronics and sensors in desired thermal conditions to avoid the outcome of radiation damage.

With the end of the agreements between CERN and Russia, mandatory responsibilities need to be covered for the experiments. CERN agreed to support the experiments with posts from a special Russian compensation fund. The needs for the ATLAS experiment arising from the fact that Russian Institutes left are manifold, highest priority is to cover technical work for the ATLAS Phase-2 Cooling Systems, for which this post is foreseen.

Functions

You will be dealing with innovative refrigeration technologies for the ATLAS detector. Your daily activities will focus on water cooled systems, CO2 and monophase detector cooling applications. As member of ATLAS cooling team, you will be involved in various types of activities spreading from pipe assembling, leak searching, cooling lines installation and insulation, operation, and installation work follow-up as well as reporting.

The functions include:

  • Carrying out of operation, maintenance, repair, testing and modification of major systems or equipment;
  • Fault-finding and elaborating repair solutions;
  • Participating in the on-call service;
  • Manufacturing, tests and installation of pipes and manifold boxes;
  • Making sure that all necessary safety measures are taken on work sites;
  • Preparing and carrying out acceptance tests.
