Superconducting Magnet Engineer (ATLAS Magnet Project) (EP-ADO-SO-2024-83-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a superconducting magnet engineer with hands-on experience in the maintenance, operation, and design of superconducting (detector) magnets? Would you like to contribute maintaining and operating the largest superconducting magnet system in the world? Are you interested in contributing to the design of future superconducting detector magnets and research and development of associated technologies? Then, take part!

You will join:

  • The Experimental Physics Department (EP), which carries out basic research in the field of experimental physics. It aims at providing a stimulating scientific atmosphere and remains an important reference centre for the European physics community. It contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
  • The ATLAS Magnet Team, part of the ATLAS Detector Operations Groups (ADO), which is responsible for maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting the ATLAS Central Solenoid, the ATLAS Toroid magnet, and various other superconducting detector magnet systems at CERN.
  • EP Magnet Working Group and EP R&D program, engaged in R&D of technologies for future superconducting detector magnets and contributing to various future superconducting detector magnet projects.

Functions

  • Join a team of experts who ensure the smooth operation of the ATLAS superconducting magnets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as well as various other superconducting detector magnets at CERN. This includes hands-on maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operation. It also includes reporting of findings through presentations and reports.
  • Together with the ATLAS Magnet Project Leader, co-chair regular meetings with experts to discuss maintenance, operation, and consolidation efforts.
  • Prepare works for the annual end-of-the-year maintenance period and the long shutdown periods.
  • Contribute to design activities for future superconducting detector magnet projects, both for CERN and for the international community.
  • Participate in Research and Development of technologies for superconducting detector magnets and associated technologies through the CERN EP R&D programme.
  • Supervise students and fellows.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of applied physics or mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in the maintenance and operation of superconducting (detector) magnets.
  • Experience in the design and fabrication of superconducting (detector) magnets and associated technologies,
  • Experience in the simulation of superconducting (detector) magnets in terms of magnetic, mechanical, and thermal properties, using FEM software such as ANSYS and COMSOL,
  • Experience in the preparation of design and drawings, using design software such as CATIA.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and modelling of superconducting magnets,
  • Operation and maintenance of superconducting magnet systems,
  • Knowledge and application of cryogenic fluid and material properties,
  • Configuration and use of information management systems: in particular CAD design software such as Catia,
  • Simulation, design, and development of superconducting detector magnets.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Communicating Effectively:
    • Expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point,
    • Delivering presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusting style and content to the audience; responding calmly and confidently to questions,
