Starting date:                01.09.2024


Duration of contract:     1 year, renewable contract for 2 x 2 years, with a maximum duration of 5 years.

Annual salary:              CHF 67’165.- (increasing each year)


Your responsibilities

50% of working time will be spent on the preparation of a doctoral thesis using data provided by the Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences (FORS), in particular those of the Swiss Household Panel (www.swisspanel.ch). The aim of the PhD project is to study the intricate equilibrium between paid and unpaid work within dual-earner couples. Specifically, the research should delve into the hurdles encountered by these couples, with particular emphasis on the imbalance in household chore distribution, disparities in career advancement, and the ensuing repercussions on individual well-being. The creativity and original ideas of the doctoral student will be very welcome.


 


30% of working time will be spent assisting with teaching (seminars on research methodology) under the supervision of a senior academic,


 


20% of working time will be dedicated to collective research projects conducted in the context of the collaborative research platform DREMSS: Developments in Research and Methods of the Social Sciences, with colleagues from the Life Course and Inequality Research Center (LIVES-ISS) and FORS.

Your qualifications


  • Master's degree in social sciences (sociology, demography or political science) ;

  • Interest in social stratification, social inequality and survey methodology with a strong focus on gender ;

  • Strong experience in quantitative social science data analysis methods ;

  • Familiarity with one or more statistical software packages (e.g. Stata, R, SPSS) ;

  • Knowledge of English and French required - the teaching assistantship will be conducted in French.


 


 


What the position offers you

A position in a dynamic research center LIVES-ISS, closely linked to the Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences (FORS) and Centre LIVES, which all provide a structured environment for research with training, workshops, seminars and informal exchange opportunities.


 


We offer continuous supervision and support during the writing of the PhD thesis. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to follow doctoral training, participate in international conferences and summer schools. He/she is expected to complete a high-quality thesis during the five years of employment and will also gain practical experience of conducting surveys and survey methodological research.
