Your role and responsibilities

Our R&D engineers and scientists develop breakthrough technologies that change the way the world works and industries do business. We constantly push the limits of convention, while retaining our focus on delivering solid returns for our customers and shareholders. The R&D Team Lead Mechanical Engineering leads an established team of engineers in the field of mechanical design for railway and off-road traction chains, including converters and battery systems. The team delivers the mechanical design competence for all platform components that provide the base for our traction converter and battery products and systems.Reporting to the R&D Unit Lead, you will utilize your technical expertise and leadership skills to drive research and development (R&D) activities for the platforms. You will closely collaborate with the Product Line, Product, and Platform Managers to shape and implement the development roadmap, and support production, engineering, and service functions to deliver the products to our customers.The work model for the role is: hybridYou will be mainly accountable for:• Leading a diverse team of engineers and overseeing their professional growth • Creating a productive and motivating work environment in a multicultural setting • Coordinating capacity, personnel, and resources for R&D projects • Managing resources for R&D activities, assigning tasks, and monitoring workloads within project teams to develop necessary competencies • Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders • Ensuring a safe work environment and compliance with design and quality standards • Embodying ABB's core values of safety, integrity, and responsibility in all actions.

Qualifications for the role

• Mechanical engineering degree with proven leadership skills and strong communication abilities
• Experienced in leading product development in propulsion and battery energy storage systems
• Proficient in design engineering, CAD, PLM, ERP tools, and structural/thermal engineering
• Familiar with industry standards for railway and e-mobility applications
• Highly motivated, curious, and eager to learn new technologies.
• Fluent in English and German with a valid work permit for Switzerland.
