About the team you are joining

The Assistant Director Legal Services (ADLS) is a senior legal professional with significant knowledge, technical and leadership skills and experience and is responsible for providing expertise, advice, support, and research on diverse subject areas to support IATA’s business activities, both internally and externally.  The ADLS within the Standards Legal Workstream is part of the Legal Workstream leadership team under the leadership and direction of the Director Legal Services (DLS).  The ADLS reports to the DLS.

What your day would be like

- Provides independent legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, which may include those related to IATA’s core activities, standard setting (IATA Traffic Conferences), financial settlement systems (BSP and CASS), Agency Programs, products and services, bankruptcy law, antitrust law, administrative law, litigation, dispute resolution, administration and management, procurement and contracts, corporate compliance and human resources through the following activities:
- Prepares and provides to IATA’s business groups independent legal advice on questions concerning the interpretation or application of law, legal instruments, or legal principles in relation to IATA’s or airline member activities across multiple jurisdictions.
- Drafts appropriate responses to correspondence and communication raising
legal issues or having legal implications.
- Drafts and advises on agreements, contracts, instruments, governance documents, and policies in the context of IATA's business activities
- Provides substantive legal advice in commercial negotiations
- Responds to requests for legal assistance from clients and work assignments referred by DLSs or GC
- Assigns and leads the work of junior lawyers as required
- Responsible for strategic management of IATA litigation
- Responsible for managing Legal input into relevant Advisory Councils, IATA Governance groups and Conferences
- Provides support and assistance to DLS on the leadership of the Standards Workstream including providing input into performance reviews, budget, workstream business planning, work allocation.
- Works collaboratively with the DLSs and other ADLSs to adapt to change and develop and implement improvements within and across the Legal Workstreams.
- Acts as a mentor to junior lawyers and provides general oversight of the quality, timeliness and professionalism of their legal work within relevant Workstream portfolios.
- Contributes to the development of other team members.
- Peer reviews work of other team members.
- Leads client relationships on relevant Workstream portfolio work.
- Leads training for IATA staff on various topics.
- Leads projects.
- Drafts material on legal subjects for dissemination to airline legal members including case reviews, summaries of legal developments.
- Manages, instructs, and approves the budget for external counsel in accordance with GCCS team processes.
- Monitors and reviews performance of external counsel.
- Collaborates with other GCCS team members across the work of the GCCS.
- Leads communication with both IATA staff, external counsel, and airline members.
- Maintains strong relationships with specialist legal communities relevant to IATA’s work.

We would love to hear from you if you meet the following criteria

Advanced University degree in law, (LLB, JD, LLM) from an internationally recognized university,
Admission to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction, preferably the UK, EU member state, Canada, US, Australia or New Zealand.
Fifteen years post legal qualification experience in increasingly responsible positions in an organization, government department or law firm.
Significant legal professional knowledge, skills and experience.
Excellent command of English.
Superior written and oral communication skills.
