The Director, Patient Advocacy, R&D will create the strategy and implement the plan to refine J&J’s approach to patient advocacy within research and development. In a rapidly changing external environment, this role will be key in building strong relationships with patient advocacy organizations and patient communities to better understand their challenges, needs, and experiences.



We are looking for several Patient Advocacy Director(s) roles to fill, each of them focusing on one the below initiatives. Experience is required in one of the below areas; in several, is a plus.



  • Development of a patient advocacy framework to engage with the patient advocacy organizations in R&D activities to create an integrated, differentiated, and superior experience for patients. This framework will be then applied across the J&J development portfolio.

  • Development of disease area/trial level advocacy plans for R&D, to integrate the patient perspective in a strategic way and further refine our protocol design, operational execution, and speed to market in specific therapeutic areas. This leader will work to translate the overall advocacy strategy into realistic plans to improve patient and site voice in our clinical development programs.

  • Identification and implementation of above/trial advocacy/policy initiatives that matters to patients and J&J's R&D program efforts.

  • Transformation of the J&J R&D culture, processes, SOPs and KPIs to embed patient advocacy in J&J R&D day-to-day workflow.


This role will partner internally with the Innovation Health team, Global Development, Policy and Patient Advocacy, therapeutic area teams, commercial, bioethics, legal, policy, and compliance.


Externally, with patient organizations, regulatory bodies and other external stakeholders.


This is a new role for the organization and requires a patient centric mindset. The Patient Advocacy Director must have vision and dedication needed to bring a new role to life, including building new Innovation strategies and best practices, bringing new industry differentiating capabilities to the Global Development Delivery Unit, and creating new sources of value within drug development to patients and sites.



Key Responsibilities:



  • Develop a patient advocacy strategic framework in R&D with our business partners, engaging with the patient communities to create an integrated, differentiated, and superior experience for patients across J&J’s portfolio

  • Develop and drive the implementation of a disease area/trial patient advocacy strategy to further refine our protocol design, operational execution, and speed to market in specific therapeutic areas.

  • Identify and implement the above disease area /policy initiatives that matters to patients and J&J's R&D program/efforts.

  • Map and update SOPs and KPIs to embed patient advocacy in J&J' R&D day-to-day workflow. Establish and implement a plan to transform the culture in J&J R&D to become a patient-centric organization.

  • Cultivate, grow and lead relationships with targeted stakeholder decision-makers within advocacy organizations.

  • Serve as the single point of contact between R&D Innovation, Engagement and Advocacy, and internal functions (Global Development, Therapeutic Area Teams, Health Policy and Advocacy, Communications, Scientific Affairs, R&D, Senior Leadership)

  • Monitor the stakeholder environment, make strategic recommendations to strengthen existing relationship and identify new avenues for partnership

  • Partner closely with the Policy organization and provide the voice of targeted advocacy organizations to inform overall R&D strategy

  • Manage budget and execute sponsorship requests (corporate sponsorships, corporate memberships, charitable requests, non-CME) from key stakeholder groups including physician societies and patient advocacy organizations, in coordination with other advocacy-facing teams

  • Lead and participate in Strategic Planning with internal partners in R&D
