Job Description

About This Role

As our Senior Engineer II, Automation, you will maintain and troubleshoot all process control system hardware and software, including Programmable Logic Control (PLC), Distributed Control System (DCS), and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) strategies. This support will be for a platform recipe-driven, fully integrated, and validated biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Solothurn (SOL), Switzerland. You will create software design specifications, implement new control strategies, and develop and execute software and respective test protocols to support operations, new products, and processes.

In this role, you will lead product tech transfers and perform Responsible Engineering (RE) duties across multiple Manufacturing Unit Operations and Automation Systems. You will also be responsible for leading and managing medium to large engineering projects with minimal direction, while allocating project tasks and providing direction to contract software engineers. Additionally, you will participate in multi-functional teams to implement changes and improve existing processes.

Finally, you will mentor and lead junior level engineers, troubleshoot process control systems, and support manufacturing operations through a 24/7 on-call rotation.

What You'll Do

  • Identify and lead process and continuous improvement projects across various Manufacturing unit operations as well as Automation systems. Provide technical leadership in complex problem-solving and decision-making, collaborate with and influence business stakeholders with a focus on driving and implementing innovative recipe-driven, shopfloor automation systems and solutions. Troubleshoot process control systems and support manufacturing operations during office hour and through an 24/7 on-call rotation.Responsible for Quality Records such as Change Control, Deviations, Corrective and Preventative Actions.
  • Support software and hardware of local Automation systems including and not limited to DeltaV, PLC, OSI PI, Infobatch, Syncade. Perform System administration duties. and respective lifecycle documentation documents including URS, Functional Specification, Design specifications, functional tests, Commissioning Plans, and Qualification/Validation Protocols through Biogen’s Quality Management Systems.
  • Lead local cross functional teams and collaborate with global and network stakeholders to for process and system improvements. Develop complex software solutions to support site capital and global large capital projects.
  • Mentor and lead junior level Engineers within Department.
  • Enable high quality compliance adherence which includes and not limited to maintaining training record, support internal and external inspection activities, owns and maintain local procedures.

Qualifications

Who you are

You are fluent with various Automation systems including DCS (DeltaV), Data Historian (OSI PI), Batch Reporting systems, MES (Syncade), and PLCs (Siemens). You have experience implementing Facilities, Utilities, and Manufacturing shop floor Automation systems. Your expertise with DCS encompasses the control of PLCs and equipment, as well as integration with MES and historian systems, to support the site’s Review-by-Exception (RBE) strategy and maintain a paperless manufacturing environment. You possess a great understanding of instrumentation to facilitate troubleshooting.

Required skills

  • BS or MS Degree in an Engineering discipline (Chemical, Biotechnology etc) or Computer Sciences or equivalent professional experience in the relevant fields.
  • Must have demonstrated experience for technical leading of complex Delta V Automation systems with integrated Syncade MES systems in regulated facilities.
  • Must have 13+ years of experience in the automation/biotech/pharmaceutical engineering/manufacturing environment.
  • Fluent in English (Must); German, French also desired.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, proactive, creative and self-motivated with ability to multi-tasks.
  • Ability to process large volumes of information, make decisions under pressure, and provide leadership in difficult situations.
  • Good communication and relationship skills is required.
