ABB Corporate Research, in close collaboration with ABB businesses, develops the foundations for the next generation of ABB products. The Materials team at ABB’s Swiss research center in the proximity of Zurich focuses on the development and manufacturing of innovative materials to be implemented in the company’s future products.We are currently offering outstanding students the chance to join our multidisciplinary team of researchers in the field of metallic, composite, and polymer materials. In the frame of a six-month internship scheduled to start in August 2024, you will be able to put theory into practice by contributing to one of our projects on future energy technologies. Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to current research projects focusing on metals, alloys, and metal matrix composites as well as the associated manufacturing processes for ABB's innovative products
  • Develop and optimize material manufacturing processes on the lab-scale
  • Analyze the produced materials or engineering prototypes with various characterization techniques to obtain a good understanding of the relationship between process parameters, microstructure, and material characteristics
  • Evaluate the obtained data and document findings and present test results to the team

Your background

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science/Engineering or a related discipline (completion of at least six semesters); official enrollment is essential
  • General understanding of and interest in metals and metal matrix composite materials and the related processing technologies
  • Experience in specimen preparation by metallography, light microscopy, and general laboratory work
  • Experience in powder metallurgy, sintering, and know-how in experimental methods (XRD, SEM, Hardness, etc.) is of advantage
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated mindset and ability to work independently
  • Highly conscientious individual with a keen sense of responsibility
  • Fluent command of English, both written and spoken, German is a plus
