Vice President, Commercial Strategy & Policy

About the Role

The Vice President, Commercial Strategy & Policy at Thomson Reuters will work with Sales leadership to develop and maintain our Enterprise Commercial Policies aimed to maximize value for Thomson Reuters as well as lead a team of deal desk professionals to help support sales execution. This leader will bring a transformative approach to our Commercial Policy and deal execution processes as TR transitions into a leading AI technology company.

The key areas of responsibility for this role include:

TREC Commercial Leadership

  • Establish robust operating rhythm with segment management teams to ensure there is a formal forum and platform for key TREC business needs and goals requiring segment engagement to be socialized and actioned
  • Establish operating metrics and progress to be utilized against TREC priorities, targets and goals
  • Chair TR’s Commercial Steerco, facilitating key decision-making processes as related to enterprise GTM policies and initiatives

Commercial Policies

  • Develop commercial policies and customer contracting criteria
  • Provide a commercial policy and policy management process that is both structured and flexible
  • Ensure consistency and transparency of commercial policy implementation and exceptions
  • Establish and execute commercial simplification strategy on an ongoing basis. Interface with product and product marketing teams to understand Go to Market strategy and establish product and offer structures Establish short term and long-term commercial actions plans for scalability, working closely with GTM Systems
  • Engage with various stakeholders in the segments, product marketing, product and marketing to establish operational readiness for GTM execution (e.g. product launches, partnership readiness)
  • Lead the Proposal and Procurement Management team and coordinate Customer RFPs from release to contract award. Manage vendor registrations and certifications to facilitate Sales

Deal Desk

  • Build an industry-leading central deal desk to aid in complex deal execution and implement best practices
  • Drive pricing and bid management processes and rules, that optimize the tradeoff between quantity and price
  • Provide “one stop shop” for reps and sales leaders to facilitate deal flow across exceptions, GCO, Product Marketing, Customer to Cash (incl. Order Processing)
  • Coordinate deal structuring of complex and non-standard deals; assists field with negotiating strategy
  • Ensures adherence to commercial policy rules particularly on discount and price capture
  • Identifies gaps in sales process and executes projects to expedite deal flow
  • Understands deal trends, works with pricing, prod marketing, etc. to improve feedback loop

About You

You're a fit for the role of Vice President, Commercial Strategy & Policy if your background includes the following skills and experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; Master’s degree in Business or equivalent preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in running commercial policy, and deal desk functions
  • Prior experience with a fast growth enterprise software or technology company in sales and sales management highly preferred
  • Prior people management experience required. Experience leading virtual and global teams in multiple time zones (North America, Europe, LATAM and AEM)
  • Exceptionally strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities
  • A consultative and customer centric approach. Able to speak in front of senior executives as well as write clearly, concisely and compellingly
  • Experience managing and coaching a team of high performing employees
  • Ability to deploy a wide-range of influencing techniques to drive cross-functional alignment and to confront and resolve disagreements among senior stakeholders
  • Understanding of Thomson Reuters strategic vision and objectives
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen to understand commercial implications of our platform transformation
  • Good understanding of cross-sell and up-sell opportunities in the customer segments as well as Thomson Reuters product and customer landscape
  • Demonstrated ability to judiciously balance between individual needs and enterprise-wide requirements and to assess and transparently represent tradeoffs, enabling top management decision-making
  • Always focused on doing what’s right for the business. High energy and contagious enthusiasm. Willing to take on tough projects and challenges with demonstrated knowledge of the needs of the Sales teams
