Scope of the role

The Sanctions Compliance Officer will be part of the legal team responsible for the global sanctions compliance program.

The responsibilities of this position include participating in, and, supporting group sanctions compliance efforts, implementing and enforcing internal controls, policies, and procedures to assure compliance with applicable sanction laws and regulations as well as best market practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring and analysis of regulatory changes and sanction updates from relevant authorities and bodies (e.g. UN Security Council, Swiss SECO, US OFAC, UK OFSI, Council of the EU, Monetary Authority of Singapore).
  • Providing sanction compliance advise to commercial team on cross-border commodities trading and shipping from sanctions compliance perspective and assisting with ad-hoc transaction monitoring checks.
  • Providing support to legal and contract team in reviewing non-standard sanction compliance clauses, destination restriction clauses, price cap compliance provisions etc.
  • Acting as a focal person for the pool of external law firms in coordination of sourcing sanction compliance advice and analysis.
  • Review and maintenance of existing internal sanction policies and guidance documents across all jurisdictions of sanction concern, drafting and implementation of new framework elements of the global sanctions compliance program.
  • Identifying potential areas of sanctions compliance vulnerability and risk; providing support for developing/implementing corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues.
  • Performing sanction compliance audit and risk assessment.
  • Assisting in the development and provision of sanctions compliance training.

About you

  • A Bachelor's and a Master's degree in law required
  • Excellent understanding of the sanctions framework of USA / UK / EU and Switzerland, especially in relation to commodities trading and shipping industry.
  • Familiarity with sanctions screening tools (e.g. World-Check One) and official sanctions databases.
  • 3-5 years of sanction compliance or legal/compliance working experience within energy commodities trading or shipping firm.
  • Team player with good communication skills, able to converse efficiently with senior commercial team members and external parties.
  • Confident, precise, hands-on mentality and service-oriented.
  • Fluent in English, additional language such as French, Spanish or Russian, is an asset.
