Professor of Practice Position in Structural Engineering
The EPFL School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) invites applications for a part-time position as Professor of Practice (PoP) in Structural Engineering in the Section and Institute of Civil Engineering.
The PoP is expected to maintain an active role in engineering practice while contributing 20% of their time to EPFL, fostering a dynamic exchange between academia and industry. The PoP position is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
The main mission of the PoP is teaching. The PoP will enrich the civil engineering program at EPFL (Bachelor and Master levels) by developing project-based learning experiences. A major focus of the role will be the creation and delivery of a Master-level course in bridge design, as well as the supervision of semester and Master projects, providing students with hands-on, real-world design challenges. Beyond teaching, the PoP will actively foster collaboration with EPFL laboratories, strengthening the connection between research and industry. By building strategic partnerships, the PoP will contribute to bridging academic excellence with professional practice.
The ideal candidate will hold a diploma in Civil Engineering and an exceptional professional track record in structural engineering. A minimum of fifteen years of industry experience in structural or civil engineering--encompassing bridges, buildings, and/or other infrastructure--is required. The candidate should be a visionary practitioner with a proven ability to drive innovation and excellence in design, as well as a strong commitment to sustainability. A PhD in this domain is not a requirement.
With its main campus located in Lausanne and its developing antennae in neighboring cantons in Switzerland, EPFL fosters excellence and promotes diversity. It is equipped with the latest experimental and computational infrastructure and offers an ideal environment for multi-disciplinary research. The EPFL environment is multilingual and multicultural, with English, serving as a common interface - notably, Master level courses are taught in English.
