The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel (USB) invite applications for a Professorship in Ophthalmology at the University of Basel, combined with the position of Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the USB, to be filled by November 1st, 2026, or by agreement.
The Eye Clinic is part of the Department of Head Organs, Musculoskeletal and Neuromedicine at the University Hospital Basel and is the central ophthalmological university care facility for Northwestern Switzerland and beyond.
With the "Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB)" as an internationally renowned research institute in the field of basic ophthalmological research, the Eye Clinic in Basel has a unique opportunity to position itself with clinical and translational research at the highest level through appropriate cooperation with the IOB.
The research direction of the professorship is basically open, but should be in the area of clinical research, preferably in the field of retinal diseases.

Your position
You are responsible for the eye clinic of the University Hospital Basel -with respect to the medical, financial, and organizational management.
With your clinical expertise and your background in research, you will strengthen the national and international visibility of Ophthalmology at the University of Basel. You will apply your clinical expertise and interest in teaching to secure and advance state-of-the-art training and continuing education of ophthalmological assistants and senior physicians in accordance with the requirements of the Swiss Institute for Medical Training and Continuing Education (SIWF). With your commitment to university research and teaching, you inspire students and promote young academics in Ophthalmology. Your participative, goaloriented understanding of leadership will ensure an attractive working environment for academic and clinical specialists. You will lead an ophthalmological research group and create a productive environment for a successful research team. Through the institutional embedding into the IOB you help to further enhance its and your own international scientific reputation.

Your profile
You have broad experience in all areas of ophthalmology with profound clinical experience in the subspecialty of retinal diseases. Broad surgical experience in all areas of ophthalmology and especially in the field of retinal surgery is desirable. You have successfully conducted your own clinical research, including securing competitive third-party funding, in a research area associated with clinical ophthalmology, preferably also in the field of retinal diseases. You have proven leadership experience in an academic environment. Your distinctive expertise, leadership, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to cooperate place you in an ideal position to gain acceptance and trust. You are able to create an attractive work environment, inspire creative thinking that can be put into action, and encourage your employees. Your knowledge of German and English is very good.
