We are looking for a proactive and skilled Software Engineer to join the newly forming research group Analytics and Informatics for Child Health (AICH) at the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The position is embedded in the Basel Research Centre for Child Health (BRCCH) - a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment where engineers, clinicians, and scientists collaborate to solve challenges in pediatric healthcare.
As a core member of the team, you will play a key role in supporting AI/ML research by building and maintaining robust infrastructure, developing research tools, and enabling scalable data pipelines for working with sensitive clinical datasets.
Your position
- Set up, manage, and maintain high-performance and cloud-based computing infrastructure (e.g., SLURM, Kubernetes, Docker)
- Design, develop and maintain data pipelines for clinical data sources (EHR, imaging, sensor data)
- Build and support software tools and prototypes used in AI/ML research projects, including decision support tools for clinical use
- Collaborate with researchers to optimize training workflows and deployment
- Ensure compliance with data privacy and security protocols
- Act as a technical partner to AI researchers and clinical collaborators
- Set up and maintain the group website and contribute to the digital presence of the lab
Your profile
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related field
- Strong programming skills (Python, shell scripting; C++/Java a plus)
- Experience with cluster, cloud and containerized infrastructure (HPC, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Experience with AI/ML workflows, big data processing, and deployment pipelines (weights&biases, MLFlow etc)
- Experience with using website Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Wordpress or Drupal to deploy websites
- Familiarity with healthcare or biomedical data is an advantage
- Team player with a hands-on mindset and excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in a research-driven environment
- Willingness to proactively propose technical ideas and solutions that enhance research and infrastructure
- Fluent in English
