Postdoctoral / Reservoir Engineer position: THM-coupled reservoir modeling

Postdoctoral / Reservoir Engineer position: THM-coupled reservoir modeling

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The ETH Zürich Geothermal Energy & Geofluids (GEG) Group investigates subsurface reactive fluid and geothermal energy transfer by developing and employing computer simulations, laboratory experiments, and field analyses. Our aim is to gain fundamental insights and develop sustainable technologies to address societal needs. Fluid injection or production induces changes in subsurface reservoir properties due to thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupled processes. Advancing the understanding of these processes enables the development of subsurface energy and storage technologies and monitoring technologies thereof (e.g. seismicity and gravity monitoring). For example, CO2-Plume Geothermal (co-invented by Prof. Saar), turns CCS into CCUS by extracting geothermal energy from the CO2 while geologically sequestering all injected CO2. To invent and improve such subsurface technologies and associated monitoring solutions, the GEG group is offering a postdoctoral / reservoir engineering position.

Job description

We invite applicants with a background in compositional reservoir modeling of THM-coupled processes. The goal of this position is to develop detailed THM-coupled numerical models, be it for efficient field development strategies or improving monitoring technologies, by quantifying the relationships between THM-coupled responses and measurable variations in geophysical quantities (e.g. seismic velocity, gravity). Leveraging your expertise and modeling insights, your innovative thinking extends the state-of-the-art of geothermal energy production and CO2 / H2 storage technologies.

Profile

We seek a highly motivated and self-organized individual with a PhD or equivalent industry experience in the topic of Geoscience, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field, with a proven track record in modeling THM-coupled processes. Successful candidates will have:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of 3D reservoir simulations on multiphase non-isothermal and mechanical processes, ideally in the domain of CCS, geothermal energy or petroleum engineering
  • Proficiency in reservoir simulation tools (commercial e.g. CMG GEM or open source such as OPM, MOOSE or equivalent)
  • Exposure to field piloting, surveillance planning and/or field development planning is a plus
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, with exposure to geology, geomechanics, petrophysics, geophysics, production chemistry, production technology, well engineering, process engineering and economics
  • Understanding of methodologies to assess and quantify subsurface uncertainty
  • Experience in data analytics and visualization (e.g., Python or equivalent)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal skills, capable of working in an inclusive, multicultural environment
  • Knowledge of seismic velocity and gravity surveying is a plus
  • Any experience or interest in performing flow-through experiments is advantageous
  • Fluency in English is required
