The BEARS Charity for Plastic Surgery Research (SHAB Nr.48 10.03.2021, Publ. 1005119924) is pleased to announce funding for pilot and feasibility research proposals. Applicants should propose projects that will be conducted at The Nerve Research Group, Inselspital and the Department for BioMedical Research, University of Bern, Switzerland and collaborate with the Department of Plastic Surgery, University of Rochester Medical Center, New York, USA.

Projects should be limited to basic science research examining the differences between nerve regeneration in peripheral vs cranial nerve regeneration. Applications may request up to 50, 000 CHF for the first three months, with the possibility of an additional 50, 000 CHF to support experimental costs, travel, and relocation expenses. The funding will be for a period of one year maximum, and is conditional on acquiring an immigration visa to conduct the proposed research in the USA and Switzerland.

• Hold a medical degree and have completed subspecialist training in hand and/or peripheral nerve surgery.
• Have completed a minimum of one-year basic science research in a neuroscience laboratory.
• Submit for additional external funding during the award period.
• Applicants that express an interest of utilizing the data generated by this project to form the basis of an advanced degree (PhD, PD) are highly desired.
• Possess sufficient proficiency in the English language to successfully meet the program requirements and to function on a day-to-day basis. This assessment will be determined via a one-hour video-conference interview, OR by a signed official documentation from an academic institution or English language school OR by verification of an applicant's English language proficiency through a recognized English language test (TOEFL or IELTS only).

The written application is modeled after a short NIH research proposal (e.g. R03, R21), and should include:
• Cover letter with title, investigators, and description that indicates how the BEARS Charity for Plastic Surgery Research mechanism would extend research objectives that will lead to a competitive extramural grant application [one page limit].
• Research description (limited to 6 pages) including Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Preliminary Studies, Research Design and Methods.
• Supporting materials (Human Subjects, Vertebrate Animals, and Literature Cited) can follow on additional pages.
• Budget (detailed, not modular) with justification
• Bio-sketches of all Co-Investigators and key personnel.

Applications will be peer-reviewed by an internal review committee that will work with a panel of independent external reviewers to determine the most competitive project for support.
