Internship in Pan-Global Data Integration (September 2024)

Roche fosters diversity, equity and inclusion, representing the communities we serve. When dealing with healthcare on a global scale, diversity is an essential ingredient to success. We believe that inclusion is key to understanding people’s varied healthcare needs. Together, we embrace individuality and share a passion for exceptional care. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

We believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow. Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) is a global function within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED).

As a team member in the Prediction Modelling and Data Analytics (PMDA) of PS, you will work in close collaboration with (computational) toxicologists as well as other scientists in pRED, using state-of-the-art bioinformatics and biostatistics tools and methods and gaining toxicological insights from experts in the field.

This internship is meant to support enabling read-across for early safety evaluation of new drug candidates within pRED. Read-across is a widely used approach for predicting unknown properties of one molecule from known properties of similar molecules. The similarity can be drawn from different levels, for instance on the basis of structural similarity, or on the basis of the same mode or mechanisms of action as well as biological activity (e.g. same histopathology findings etc). It is a scientific method for filling data gaps on the effects of new entities and can be used to assess physicochemical properties, toxicity profiles, environmental fate and ecotoxicity.

The objective is to build a comprehensive database for Pan-global data integration of historical external and internal in vivo and mechanistic in vivo animal and in vitro data generated externally and internally with unified terminology. This data should ideally be connected to the Clinical data . The database should be extensible, i.e. able to be linked with other data relevant for computational toxicology. The database and its further development will increase the usability of these data to support drug-discovery projects.

We are seeking an intern pursuing a master’s or PhD degree in computer science or bioinformatics to help us harmonize and link the different data sources as well as develop workflows to be regularly applied to support early safety assessment.

In this position you will:

  • Support the harmonization, pre-processing and interlinking of internal and external in vivo and in vitro toxicological data

  • Develop workflows for structural and biological read-across (e.g. re-use of historical data to inform future drug development)

  • Integrate and/or link visualization tools to facilitate usage across pRED

  • Collect requirements and support architecture development for future GUI development

Qualifications Required:

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master’s program or have completed your (Master’s or Bachelor) studies not longer than 12 months ago in bioinformatics, biomedicine or computational sciences with interest or working knowledge in biology, toxicology, and/or life sciences.

You have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Programming skills in Python;

  • Knowledge and interest in pharmacology /toxicology/life sciences is an advantage;

  • Knowledge in MongoDB is an advantage;

  • Good data engineering, visualization, and interpretation skills are desirable;

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.

Start: September 2024

Duration: 6-9 Months

Workload: 100%
