Senior ICT Database Engineer – PostgreSQL Migration

Job description:

• Advise and support the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
• Define and review the target architecture for PostgreSQL-based environments
• Analyse existing database landscapes, data models, dependencies and workloads
• Develop migration strategies, implementation plans and cutover concepts
• Plan and execute database migrations
• Migrate stored procedures, views, functions, triggers and other database objects
• Identify SQL Server-specific dependencies and design suitable PostgreSQL implementations
• Evaluate and optimise database performance, queries and resource consumption
• Conduct sizing, capacity-planning and scalability assessments
• Advise on high availability, replication, disaster recovery, backup and restore strategies
• Support migration testing, performance testing and test-concept development
• Identify technical risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures
• Produce technical documentation, architectural guidelines and best practices
• Transfer knowledge to internal engineering and operational teams

About the customer:

Our client, Swisscom, is looking for a Senior ICT Database Engineer to provide technical leadership and hands-on expertise throughout a complex database migration. You will collaborate with teams based in Switzerland and the Netherlands, helping define the target architecture and ensuring secure, scalable and high-performing PostgreSQL environments.

Requirements:

Must Have:

• University of Applied Sciences degree or equivalent technical qualification
• At least 8–10 years of experience as a Database Engineer, Database Architect or DBA
• Several years of hands-on PostgreSQL experience in enterprise environments
• Proven project experience migrating Microsoft SQL Server databases to PostgreSQL
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture and internals
• Advanced expertise in query optimisation, performance tuning and indexing strategies
• Strong knowledge of partitioning, high availability and replication
• Experience designing backup, recovery and disaster-recovery solutions
• Strong capacity-planning, sizing and scalability expertise
• Excellent SQL skills
• Experience with database migration tools and assessment methodologies
• Strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving capabilities
• Independent, structured and solution-oriented approach
• Excellent consulting, stakeholder-management and communication skills
• Able to explain complex technical subjects clearly to architecture, development and operations teams
• Experience working with enterprise clients and complex stakeholder environments
• Based in Switzerland, with all services delivered exclusively from Switzerland
• German at C1 level and English at C1 level

Nice to Have:

• Experience with ITSM platforms and enterprise applications
• Background in regulated enterprise environments
• Knowledge of Azure, AWS or Kubernetes-based platforms
• Experience with enterprise PostgreSQL solutions or extended PostgreSQL distributions
• Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices within database environments
