Analytics of algal biomass conversion and bio‐oil composition


The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting‐edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. To transform the current energy system into a sustainable one, new processes for valorizing of biomass are being developed in the Catalytic Process Engineering Group. 

For contributing to further improving and understanding our biomass conversion process, we are looking for a

Your tasks

  • Development and application of novel sample preparation, data acquisition, and data analysis strategies for complex mixtures, e.g. algae‐based bio‐oils 
  • Development of high‐resolution mass spectrometry strategies for better resolution, precision, and compound identification
  • Evaluation of developed methods on different bio‐oils and other complex mixtures 
  • Publishing in international leading scientific journals 
  • Supporting teaching at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) and EPFL

Your profile

You hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with a strong focus in analytics. You are a highly motivated and skilled experimentalist with strong skills in data analysis. Experience with mass spectroscopy and/or Python programming would be an advantage. You possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and a very good command of English (German would be an advantage).
