Roche Postdoctoral Fellow (RPF) in in vitro models of intestinal inflammation

Roche fosters diversity, equity and inclusion, representing the communities we serve. When dealing with healthcare on a global scale, diversity is an essential ingredient to success. We believe that inclusion is key to understanding people’s varied healthcare needs. Together, we embrace individuality and share a passion for exceptional care. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

At Roche, we believe it is urgent to deliver medical solutions now while also developing innovations for the future. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and medical innovations. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

The position :

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Therapeutic Area of Immunology Discovery, you will focus on an exploratory research project to develop the most-advanced in vitro model of human intestinal inflammation described to date.

The RPF Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.

The duration of RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year. You will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

In this position, you will:

  • Independently drive a project to create next-generation models of inflamed mucosal tissues, with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease, by combining primary human samples, organoids, tissue-resident immune cells and microfabrication technology to recreate the cellular environment of the diseased intestine

  • Collaborate with our multidisciplinary teams to improve the ability of in vitro models to 1) recapitulate inflammatory disease, 2) understand the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms, 3) identify strategies to mitigate these pathogenic pathways

  • Generate top quality results for high impact peer-reviewed publications

Who you are:

You are a scientist with a PhD in the field of immunology with a profound understanding of mucosal biology. Furthermore, you have great interpersonal and communication skills. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies. Fundamental to this position is a proactive mindset and a willingness to learn, explore and master new techniques and technologies.

You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously since your PhD and are ready to start an RPF postdoctoral activity no later than 4 years after your PhD completion.

Knowledge or experience in any of the following areas would be considered a significant asset:

  • Handling of intestinal tissue samples, particularly inflammatory bowel disease samples

  • Deep understanding of the properties and phenotypes of mucosal immune cells

  • 3D culture

  • Genetic engineering and gene editing approaches

  • Generation, analysis and interpretation of scRNAseq data

When does it start?

The start date of this fellowship is as soon as possible. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date on your motivation letter. All applications always need to include a CV with a publication list and the names of three references, as well as a letter of motivation.

Do you know what Roche stands for? Roche embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.
