The Department of Environmental Chemistry (Uchem) and the Eawag Mass Spectrometry Facility are offering a

The newly established Mass Spectrometry Facility is a central resource to Eawag. The facility enables the analysis of organic compounds from small molecules (e.g., environmental pollutants, metabolites) to larger biomolecules (e.g., proteins, secondary metabolites) by LC/GC-HRMS, as well as the analysis of trace elements by (LC-)ICP-MS/MS, and of isotope ratios by GC/LC-IRMS. The facility currently hosts more than 20 mass spectrometers used in diverse scientific projects in the realm of aquatic research.

We are seeking a specialist who supports scientists and technicians in processing, mining, and managing large amounts of mass spectrometry data throughout various research projects. The position is situated at the interface between mass spectrometry, software development/engineering, and maintenance of IT hardware and live processing infrastructure. The position also requires the ability to establish and maintain successful collaborations with scientists, technicians and IT support staff across several departments of Eawag.

Successful candidates should ideally have
  • an MSc or PhD degree in natural sciences or information technology
  • experience in developing data processing and management solutions in a scientific context (e.g., R/Shiny, Python, web user interfaces)
  • be acquainted with mass spectrometry data (e.g., non-target processing workflows, spectral libraries)
  • possess know-how of IT infrastructure and its maintenance (required: Linux sysadmin, Bash, Docker, Docker-Compose, Git, desirable: Galaxy workflow system, Ansible, Windows/Linux networking, storage and backup solutions)
  • excellent time management and communication skills
Candidates should be fluent in written and spoken English; knowledge in German would be an asset.
