SUMMARY OF THE JOB

The Carbon Removal Specialist directly contributes to help map and identify high-quality CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) projects, recognized as one of the climate mitigation methods by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), as well as required to neutralize unabatable emissions and fulfill SBTi Net-Zero commitment.

Key challenges and objectives are:

  • Monitor VCM and CDR market trends
  • Formulate and support execution of credit procurement strategies
  • Oversee the Group credit portfolio accounting and monitoring
  • Support the development and implementation of the Group CDR generation methodology

MAIN ACTIVITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

The Carbon Removal Specialist supports the efforts of the Group to progress on our Sustainability journey, through the following activities:

  • Conducts regular technical and commercial benchmarking of current and emerging CDR technologies, selecting the most promising ones to invest in and build Holcim credit portfolio
  • Supports the development and implementation of the procurement strategy to supply, account and monitor CDR transactions in alignment with internal and external stakeholders
  • Monitors CDR market developments, such as prices, main players, policies, regulations, and main credit utilization, to anticipate emerging opportunities and proactively address potential controversies
  • Assists in the development of methodologies, technically assessing CDR generation projects, ensuring adherence to high-quality standards
  • Bridges collaboration between VCM and internal stakeholders in order to streamline efforts on methodologies development and verification
  • Supports the Reporting Team during data campaigns and disclosures, and provide guidelines to countries within carbon credit-related topics

PROFILE REQUIRED

Level of education/qualifications normally required:

  • Master Degree or Ph.D. in Sciences or Engineering

Specific work experience:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in the field of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and Voluntary Carbon Market
  • Track of records of collaboration with carbon crediting programs to formulate and implement methodologies for carbon credit generation, leading to successful project certification and credit issuance

Technical / functional skills:

  • Deep technical understanding of carbon removal technology associated with carbon credit generation
  • Detailed comprehension of the Voluntary and Compliance Carbon Markets players, frameworks, and regulations such as ICVCM, Gold Standards, Verra, EU ETS, SBTi, etc.
  • Excellent understanding of carbon accounting, relevant emissions regulations, government incentives and policies supporting carbon removal initiatives
  • Strong data analytics skills, accuracy and rigor in computing and analyzing data from multiple sources (using Excel, Google sheet computing tools) and ability to propose actions to be taken based on results

Behavioural competencies:

  • Ability to work in multinational matrix environment, adapting to cultural differences, and to work in network and horizontal relationships

Leadership and managerial abilities:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to design and deliver presentations to senior management and external audiences

Language skills:

  • English – fluent (spoken and written)
  • Any additional language skills would be an advantage (i.e. German, French, Spanish, Italian)

  • 10-20%
