Electronics Technical Engineer (SY-ABT-BTE-2024-73-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you passionate about electronics design and development? Are you skilled in both analogue and digital design? If you are eager to acquire new skills and knowledge in a team of professionals who will train you in the field of pulsed power systems applied to the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, this is an opportunity for you. CERN, take part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Accelerator Beam Transfer Group (ABT) is in charge of the design, development, construction, installation, exploitation, and maintenance of all the particle beam injection as well as the extraction equipment of the CERN’s accelerator complex.

You will be working in the Beam Transfer Electronics (BTE) Section specialised in the design and exploitation of controls electronics for all equipment under the responsibility of the ABT group and associated R&D activities.

Functions

As an electronics technical engineer, you will take part in the study, design, development and commissioning of dedicated electronics and gateware for the control of beam transfer equipment across the whole CERN accelerator complex.

In close collaboration with the experts of the Group, you will:

  • Participate in the exploitation, maintenance and upgrade of existing systems, proposing improvements as required;
  • Design electronics systems down to board level for use in pulsed power application; capture requirements, study possible solutions and draft the functional and engineering specifications;
  • Conceive, implement, simulate, test and commission dedicated electronics (mixed signal designs) to drive, protect and monitor pulsed generators whilst ensuring the required electromagnetic compatibility;
  • Develop new gateware to implement embedded control logic; document and refactor existing ones where needed;
  • Analyse data to improve your designs, automate where possible; develop functional and hardware test benches to deliver reliable products when required;
  • Carry out analogue circuit simulations and design power electronics circuits for triggering high-voltage pulse generators and electric field deflectors.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering, electromechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in electronics circuit design, both digital and analogue;
  • Demonstrated experience with gateware design for FPGAs;
  • Hands-on experience with Linux, Python or other scripting languages would be an asset;
  • Any experience with power or high-voltage electronics would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and simulation of analog electronic circuits;
  • Design and simulation of digital electronic circuits: RTL and simulation designs with VHDL and/or System Verilog;
  • Testing and measurement of analog electronic circuits;
  • Knowledge and application of electromagnetic compatibility, interference and susceptibility.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: actively seeking feedback on own performance and taking steps to improve it; remaining objective, focused and productive in a stressful environment; focusing on solutions rather than problems; working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously; instigating and promoting change as an opportunity for organisational development.
  • Communicating effectively: delivering presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusting style and content to the audience; responding calmly and confidently to questions; expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
  • Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components.
  • Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.

Additional Information

Eligibility and closing date:

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 17.06.2024 at 23:59 CEST.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:

  • Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and official holidays.
  • Work in radiation areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
