Experimental Animal Center
Start of employment: 01.04.2026 or by arrangement
The employment is initially limited to 1 year with the option of extension.
The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) of the University of Bern is the structural unit responsible for in-vivo research. The EAC ensures optimal conditions for animal experiments to achieve the best possible quality of basic, translational, and clinical research with animals. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the "culture of care," and compliance with guidelines and regulations are the cornerstones of the EAC's strategy.
As an HSE Officer, you will significantly contribute to ensuring that the EAC meets the highest standards in occupational safety, health protection, and environmental protection. You advise managers and employees on all matters related to occupational safety, accident prevention, and environmental protection and ensure that legal requirements and internal guidelines are complied with.
Tasks
• Responsibility for HSE standards and processes within the animal husbandry of the EAC
• Advice on environmental protection, occupational safety, and accident prevention
• Support in risk assessments and selection of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Planning and optimization of workplaces and workflows from ergonomic and safety perspectives
• Monitoring and improvement of occupational safety, accident prevention, and environmental protection
• Promotion of HSE awareness and support in training and instruction
• Monitoring legal changes and communication with internal and external contacts
• Coordination and execution of incident analyses
• Processing and implementation of requests and requirements from the University of Bern's Safety Office
Requirements
• Technical basic training with further education as a specialist in occupational safety and health protection with a federal diploma, EKAS safety specialist, or equivalent
• Several years of professional experience in an academic, medical, or technical environment
• Sound knowledge of relevant standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001)
• Good knowledge in fire protection and emergency organization
• Experience in conducting internal environmental and safety instructions as well as training
• Good German and English skills
