The Doctoral Program in Ancient Studies at the University of Basel is offering a one-year starting scholarship of CHF 32,000 (in two installments with evaluation). The scholarship begins on 01.10.2026.
Applicants who are about to complete their studies may apply, provided they can submit the official degree certificate by no later than 09.06.2026.

1. Cover letter 2. Curriculum vitae (possibly with publication list) 3. Outline of the dissertation project (max. 3 pages) 4. Degree certificate 5. 1-2 writing samples (each max. 20 pages, including at least 1 scientific qualification paper) 6. Reference letters The application can be submitted in German, French, or English. Starting scholarship holders must enroll as doctoral students at the University of Basel. The primary supervisor must belong to the Department of Ancient Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy and History. Your Tasks
The scholarships are intended to support the start phase of the doctorate. In the first six months, the scholarship holders must prepare a funding application to apply to the Swiss National Science Foundation or another funding institution for the continued financing of their doctoral project.Your Profile
A high motivation to engage within the doctoral program as well as enrollment at the University of Basel are expected. The scholarship is aimed at students who have an above-average master's degree in Ancient Studies. A dissertation project located within the research priorities of the Department of Ancient Studies at the University of Basel is desired.Applicants who are about to complete their studies may apply, provided they can submit the official degree certificate by no later than 09.06.2026.
