The Department of Biomedicine is a joint effort between the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop pioneering therapies benefiting the lives of patients in areas of unmet need. With more than 70 research groups and 850 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University. We are located in the heart of Basel across 6 different locations. The Microscopy Core Facility of the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel is a state-of-the-art scientific platform offering DBM researchers instrumentation and technical and scientific expertise. As the only Nikon Center of Excellence in Switzerland, we foster a close collaboration with Nikon.
The facility is based in two sites and is providing more than 30 instruments ranging from confocal, widefield, high-content screening, two-photon, super-resolution, stereo as well as laser micro dissection microscopes.
With a young and dynamic team of five people we contribute to many translational and basic research projects, enabling the successful application of diverse microscopy techniques and image analysis projects.
The working place of the successful candidate is the Department of Biomedicine at Mattenstrasse 28, 4058 Basel and could be extended to Hebelstrasse 20, 4031 Basel in the future.
Your position
Well maintained microscopes are key to perform excellent imaging. In your role you will support the facility standardizing metrology workflows and assist in routine maintenance and quality checks. In this context, you will- Acquire standardized images on various systems.
- Measure light and laser intensity on various microscopes.
- Perform image analysis.
- Document the results.
Your profile
- Student (BA/MA) in life sciences in the field of biology, physics, biophysics or a related field with a focus on microscopy.
- Experience in the field of light microscopy.
- Experience in image analysis. Programming skills are an advantage.
- A sense for data handling and management.
- High degree of motivation and self-reliance combined with excellent organizational and team-work skills.
- A strong sense for diligence and accuracy.
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English, German is an advantage.
